As an apprentice Teaching Assistant, you will work with teachers to raise the learning and attainment of pupils while also promoting their independence, self‑esteem, and social inclusion. Provide support to pupils so that they can access the curriculum, participate in learning, and experience a sense of achievement.
What You’ll Do
Personal and professional conduct:
- Maintain proper and professional regard for the ethos, policies and practices of the school as a professional member of staff.

Knowledge and understanding:
- Acquire the appropriate skills, qualifications and/or experience required for the teaching assistant role, with support from the school employer.
- Demonstrate expertise in understanding the needs of all pupils and adapt support to meet individual needs.
- Ensure knowledge and understanding are relevant and up‑to‑date by reflecting on practice, liaising with school leaders and accessing professional development.
- Possess subject and curriculum knowledge relevant to the role and apply this effectively in supporting teachers and pupils.
- Understand classroom and whole‑school responsibilities, recognising that duties may extend beyond direct support.
- Comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety, confidentiality, data protection, intimate care and the SEN Code of Practice 2014; report all concerns to an appropriate person.
Teaching and learning:
- Adopt relevant strategies to support the teacher’s work and increase achievement for all pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities.
- Promote, support and facilitate inclusion by encouraging participation of all pupils in learning and extracurricular activities.
- Use effective behaviour management strategies consistently in line with school policy and procedures.
- Contribute to assessment and planning by supporting monitoring, recording and reporting of pupil progress as appropriate.
- Communicate effectively and sensitively with pupils to adapt to their needs and support learning.
- Maintain a stimulating and safe learning environment by organising and managing physical teaching space and resources.
