A rapidly growing clean technology company developing next-generation hydrogen power solutions is recruiting an R&D Controls Engineer.
Following significant investment and continued growth, the company is expanding its engineering team to develop innovative power generation technologies that support the transition to a lower-carbon future.
As an R&D Controls Engineer, you’ll join a multidisciplinary engineering team responsible for developing and improving advanced control systems for innovative energy products. This is a genuine product development role where you’ll work from concept through testing, validation and deployment, helping shape new technologies rather than maintaining existing systems.
This role would suit an engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, developing new control strategies and collaborating with electrical, mechanical and software engineers in a fast-paced R&D environment.
You’ll be responsible for designing, developing and validating control systems for advanced energy technologies, supporting projects from early‑stage concept through prototype development and commercial deployment.
Key responsibilities and qualifications
- Design, develop and implement control systems for advanced energy applications.
- Develop PLC software, HMIs and control architectures using Siemens TIA Portal.
- Configure PLCs, HMIs and industrial control systems.
- Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop high-performance control strategies.
- Develop and optimise control algorithms to improve system efficiency, performance and reliability.
- Carry out system integration, testing and validation activities.
- Investigate and resolve control system issues during development and commissioning.
- Produce technical documentation including functional specifications, test procedures and operating documentation.
- Support modelling, simulation and performance analysis to optimise system behaviour.
- Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering, Control & Systems Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline. Equivalent industry experience will also be considered.
- Experience programming PLCs and industrial control systems.
- Strong understanding of control system design principles.
- Excellent problem-solving and fault-finding skills.
- Experience integrating electrical and mechanical systems.
- Comfortable working across the full product development lifecycle.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Willingness to travel occasionally to company and customer sites.
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as J1939.
- Experience in control system architecture and software development.
- Industrial automation or process control experience.
- System integration, testing and commissioning experience.
- Control algorithms, modelling, simulation and optimisation skills.
- Experience within power generation, energy, industrial automation or other complex engineering environments.
