Amazon Web Services is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer who will design, innovate, and drive mechanical system solutions for new build data centre projects across the EMEA region. Working as part of a global engineering team, you will collaborate with internal stakeholders and external consultants to deliver resilient, cost‑effective designs that support our rapidly expanding data centre footprint.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design for new and existing AWS data centre projects, ensuring designs meet performance, cost, and reliability goals.
  • Interpret user requirements and translate them into schematic, layout, and documentation deliverables.
  • Manage design consultancy firms, reviewing and approving design outputs, configuration control, and change management.
  • Collaborate with local utilities, agencies, and building authorities to define utility requirements and ensure compliance with city/county codes.
  • Engage with commissioning teams to validate installation, operation, and performance of mechanical systems.
  • Oversee concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions and travel for site reviews, engineering evaluations, audits, and site launches.
  • Approve equipment submittals, troubleshoot design‑related issues, and conduct root‑cause analysis (RCA) and corrective actions (CA).
  • Define project scopes, support technical requests during construction, and provide onsite leadership and guidance.
  • Identify and propose creative, out‑of‑the‑box solutions to improve design and operational outcomes.

A Day in the Life

Engineers in this role are responsible for end‑to‑end design ownership—from concept through permitting, construction documentation, and commissioning—to turnover. You will define critical equipment specifications, approve submittals, and support construction teams throughout the project lifecycle. Continuous learning and collaboration with cross‑functional teams are integral to delivering high‑quality, award‑winning solutions.

Basic Qualifications

  • Knowledge of critical data centre mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Experience in data centre design, construction, operations, or facility maintenance.
  • Experience in industrial or commercial engineering related to mission‑critical facilities such as data centres, power generation, or oil and gas plants.
  • Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods for data centre equipment and facilities.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineering or Architectural License.
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations for the relevant region.
  • Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and deployment or mass production.
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.
