Purpose of the Role

As Treasurer and Trustee, you will play a key leadership role in ensuring ACFA’s financial sustainability, governance, and strategic direction. You will contribute fully to Board decision‑making while providing expert financial oversight and strengthening financial processes.

Specific Responsibilities – Treasurer

  • Lead on financial oversight, ensuring the charity remains sustainable.
  • Oversee preparation and presentation of budgets, management accounts, and financial reports to the Board.
  • Ensure the Board understands the financial implications of decisions.
  • Monitor financial performance and risks, advising Trustees accordingly.
  • Oversee financial compliance and controls, liaising with the independent examiner or auditor.
  • Support the development and improvement of ACFA’s financial processes and systems.

General Responsibilities – All Trustees

  • Share collective responsibility for ACFA’s governance, compliance, and charitable objectives.
  • Attend quarterly Board meetings, prepare in advance, and contribute constructively.
  • Engage between meetings where required, including via email.
  • Make key decisions on strategy, risk, sustainability, and reputation.
  • Approve the annual budget, business plan, strategic priorities, and annual report and accounts.
  • Support Trustee induction, shared learning, and training.
  • Act in the charity’s best interests with reasonable care, skill, and diligence.
  • Uphold transparency and ethical conduct in line with the Nolan Principles and NCVO guidance.
  • Represent ACFA externally where appropriate, in line with its mission and values.

Time Commitment

  • Approximately 1 day per month.
  • Attendance at quarterly Board meetings.
  • Chairing and participating in the Finance and Fundraising Committee.

Person Specification

  • Experience in finance, accounting, or financial management (qualified or by experience).
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non‑financial audiences.
  • Strategic thinking and sound judgement.
  • Commitment to ACFA’s mission and values.
  • Experience of governance or charity finance (desirable but not essential).
