Oxfam shops have operated since 1948 and play a central role in our charity work, raising essential funds and increasing public awareness. Guided by our values of empowerment, accountability and inclusiveness, they focus on delivering high‑quality retail services while generating revenue to support our mission.

Deputy Shop Manager – Role Overview

The deputy shop manager works closely with the shop manager to drive the business, providing commercial awareness and leading the volunteer team. Responsibilities include managing day‑to‑day operations, optimizing merchandising, maintaining financial records, and engaging customers and the local community. The role is hands‑on, often the only paid staff member, and requires excellent communication, delegation and resilience to meet demanding targets.

Key Skills & Competencies

  • Support development and maintenance of an inclusive, diverse team capable of running daily shop activities.
  • Demonstrate commercial awareness, effective retail processes and strong merchandising skills.
  • Collaborate with the shop manager and build positive relationships with colleagues, customers and local community organisations.
  • Show resilience to everyday pressures, manage conflicting demands and seek appropriate support when needed.
  • Numerate and financially literate, able to interpret basic financial reports, monitor budgets and maintain administrative systems.

Values & Safeguarding

Oxfam is committed to preventing any unwanted behaviour at work, including sexual harassment, exploitation, abuse, lack of integrity and financial misconduct, and to promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults. All staff and volunteers must share and demonstrate our core values, and those in the shop manager roles will receive extensive background checks, including a Disclosure and Barring Service check.

Diversity & Inclusion

We are committed to ensuring diversity and gender equality within our organisation and encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds to apply. We aim to dismantle unequal power structures in our sector and create an inclusive workforce that celebrates differences.
