Job Summary

Full‑time locum consultant post, fixed term for 10 months, supporting Ophthalmology Paediatric services. The post will be based at Singleton Hospital in Swansea, joining a team of 16 Consultants responsible for the provision of Ophthalmology services to Swansea Bay University Health Board.

In exceptional circumstances duties may be undertaken at other locations within the Health Board and travelling between hospitals or clinics may be required. Travel expenses will be remunerated in accordance with Health Board policy.

Main Duties

  • Provide a clinical service with colleagues, responsible for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.
  • Maintain the well‑being of all patients under care, delegating appropriately and training staff.
  • Collaborate with consultant colleagues and the multi‑professional team to ensure safe, efficient and effective functioning of services in line with Health Board values and policies.
  • Contribute to improvement of services and report safety concerns.
  • Adhere to principles of good medical practice as laid down by the General Medical Council.
  • Participate in the Health Board’s risk management, clinical governance and other healthcare governance activities within the department and Surgical Division.

Qualifications and Experience

  • On Specialist Register with GMC as a specialist in Ophthalmology, or eligible for CCT within 6 months of interview date, and have passed exit exam or possess a statement of eligibility for registration issued by PMETB.
  • Primary medical qualification and a recognised specialist qualification from a European Member State allowing direct entry to the GMC Specialist Register.
  • Further relevant post‑graduate qualification in ophthalmology (e.g., FRCOphth).
  • Registered with the GMC and licensed to practice.
  • High standard of clinical skill and expertise in ophthalmology, including routine and complex cataract surgery procedures.
  • Participation in on‑call rotas and emergency cover.
  • Evidence of teaching and training of post‑/undergraduate clinical staff.
  • Experience in initiating, progressing and completing audit projects.

  • Ability to undertake on‑call duties.
  • Enthusiasm to take a lead role in clinical development and empathy towards patients.

Additional Information

The Surgical Specialties Directorate serves Neath Port Talbot Hospital in Port Talbot, and Morriston and Singleton Hospitals in Swansea, providing regional services to patients along the M4 corridor in South Wales and the population of West Wales.
