Dental Clinical Director – Specialist in Special Care or Paediatric Dentistry
The Dental Clinical Director will be an experienced dentist on the specialist register for Special Care Dentistry or Paediatric Dentistry, combining clinical practice with strategic, operational, advisory and leadership responsibilities across the Trust.
Responsibilities
- Provide clinical sessions for special care and paediatric patients, including sedation and general anaesthesia, domiciliary care, and care in secure settings.
- Lead the comprehensive delivery of oral health services for priority groups such as adults and children with learning disabilities, complex medical problems, severe mental health issues, and severe anxiety or behavioural management problems.
- Develop and influence clinical pathways in partnership with local Managed Clinical Networks, Local Dental Networks, ICB POD leads and other stakeholders.
- Manage contracts and service level agreements, including those with secondary care providers.
- Contribute to directorate, corporate and wider system strategy and planning, and provide professional and clinical advice to boards and committees.
- Maintain professional standards and deliver strategic leadership across Milton Keynes and Buckinghamshire.
- Support the recruitment, appraisal, performance and development of personnel.
Qualifications
- BDS or equivalent professional dental qualification.
- Full registration with the GDC and an NHS Performer Number.
- Relevant GDC Specialist List registration (Special Care Dentistry or Paediatric Dentistry).
- Additional registrable dental postgraduate qualification (e.g., Dental Public Health).
- Experience in salaried and specialised dental services, including primary and secondary care settings.
- Experience in NHS management, budgeting and procurement.
- Demonstrated record of planning and managing significant change and innovation.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and report‑writing skills.
- Political and clinical governance awareness; strong IT and information management skills.
- Willingness to work flexible hours and ability to drive.
