Overview
Position: Clinical Fellow in Paediatric and Adult Congenital Cardiac Surgery – 6‑month assignment at Evelina Children’s Hospital, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust, with potential extension. The postholder must be prepared to work at any additional Trust location as required.
Responsibilities
- Provide surgical care for all in‑patients scheduled for paediatric and adult congenital heart surgery.
- Assist or undertake congenital cardiac surgery cases under consultant supervision.
- Manage pre‑and post‑operative care in partnership with surgical registrars, cardiology, and intensive care teams.
- Participate in outpatient surgical clinics as agreed with consultants.
- Engage in audit and research projects identified with consultants.
- Contribute to teaching of junior staff and to clinical governance activities.
- Attend multidisciplinary meetings, peri‑operative care, and on‑call duties.
Qualifications & Experience
- Cardiothoracic trainee (ST4 equivalent or above) with foundation competency achievements.
- Full registration with GMC and licence to practice.
- MRCS or equivalent and evidence of continuous professional development.
- Demonstrated surgical exposure in adult cardiac surgery.
- Clear evidence of practical training and competencies in cardiothoracic surgery (ST1‑3) by appointment.
- Strong written and spoken English communication skills; ability to discuss treatment options with patients.
- Teamwork, judgement under pressure, situation awareness, decision making, organisation and planning skills.
- Understanding of audit, clinical risk management, evidence‑based practice and research principles.
- Commitment to NHS values: professional integrity, confidentiality, patient advocacy, clinical governance.
