Role Overview

You will have the opportunity to work closely with the therapists and wider care team across Naomi House and Jacks Place, assisting or independently carrying out therapeutic activities either 1:1 or in groups. This includes positioning support, physiotherapy programmes, promoting and practising functional tasks, supporting with activity inclusion and hydrotherapy sessions.

This role is largely practical but also includes assisting with admin/data and other tasks.

Supporting the qualified therapists with therapy treatment of a wide range of BCYA, and supporting BCYA and their families who are in Naomi House or Jacks Place for respite, day service, symptom management or end of life care admissions.

Liaising with community services such as wheelchair services, community therapy services and schools.

Managing a simple caseload of your own.

Responsibilities

  • Involvement in treating, monitoring and making minor alterations to the treatment of BCYA, considering their physical, emotional, developmental, cognitive and social needs.
  • Joint sessions with the therapy staff, while managing an independent caseload both in-house and in an outpatients style setting.
  • Building a good rapport with the BCYA and families to encourage participation and offer support.
  • Working with BCYA with a wide range of presenting conditions including neuromuscular, respiratory, neurological, and developmental needs.
  • Working in different environments, including the hydrotherapy pool, Naomi House, Jacks Place and, where appropriate, in the community.
  • Admin tasks, which includes using IT systems for booking appointments and data recording.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Proven experience of working with BCYA who have a variety of physical and cognitive impairments.
  • Good communication skills to enable close working relationships and adapt communication to meet the BCYA, family, and MDT needs.
  • Physically fit and able to work with BCYA with complex needs using different equipment and working in various positions and environments, including being water‑confident in the hydrotherapy pool.
  • Basic IT skills for completion of databases, electronic patient records, electronic booking and outcome systems.
  • Ability to work under pressure, problem‑solve and prioritise tasks in an ever‑changing workload.
  • Aware of professional boundaries and limitations of the job role, able to identify changes in clinical presentation and escalates concerns appropriately.
  • Experience working in challenging and emotive situations with active coping strategies and resilience.
  • Desirable: Level 4 qualification in a Health and social care, or BCYA related subject, combined with experience working with BCYA.

Naomi and Jack’s nursing and medical staff provide individualised care that helps to enhance short lives and supports families to make the most of their precious time with their children. Jack’s Place is the only hospice for young adults in the south of England. The medical and care teams offer specialist care, often over many years, and uphold the dignity and independence of young adults accessing the service. Full lives, however short.
