Job Description:

Responsibilities

Conduct comprehensive, highly specialist assessments of patients, including those with diverse or complex presentations/multi-pathologies. Use advanced clinical reasoning skills, interpretation of test results, and assessment techniques to provide an accurate diagnosis.

Provide specialist advice on patient care to other health and social care professionals, including challenging or requesting changes to treatment programmes/care plans set by other professionals.

Formulate and deliver individualized SLT programmes based on evidence‑based practice and treatment options, using clinical assessment, reasoning skills and treatment knowledge.

Hold responsibility for own caseload and a defined area of service or particular patient type, working without supervision. Access to advice and support is available from Advanced Practitioner SLTs and the Head of Service as required; clinical work is not routinely evaluated.

Supervise junior staff and students.

Develop and deliver training for others in the critical care area.

Undertake evidence‑based audit and research projects to further clinical practice.

Qualifications

  • Diploma, degree or Master’s level entry in Speech and Language Therapy.
  • Attendance at recent postgraduate specialist courses relevant to the clinical field(s), e.g., accredited courses, Master’s level learning, or equivalent.
  • Post‑registration experience in a specialty area plus additional experience in core areas, including experience of working within the NHS.
  • Highly specialist knowledge of acquired dysphagia.
  • Competence in instrumental dysphagia assessment.
  • Clinical supervision, teaching, mentorship and appraisal skills.
  • Experience in providing or supervising communication/swallowing care for acutely admitted patients.
