Fit Tester

We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Fit Tester to join our Fit Testing Department, supporting staff across London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust. This role is primarily based at Northwick Park Hospital, with occasional travel to other Trust sites (approximately twice per month) to meet service needs.
The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring staff safety by delivering high-quality respiratory protective equipment (RPE) fit testing services. This includes both qualitative and quantitative fit testing for tight‑fitting respirators, as well as supporting the maintenance, management, and use of Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPRs).
Responsibilities include providing training and guidance to staff on the correct use of RPE, including donning and doffing techniques, mask suitability, and safe handling and storage. You will also maintain accurate records, monitor compliance, and ensure equipment is properly maintained and available.
This role requires excellent communication, organisation, and customer service skills, as you will work closely with clinical and non‑clinical teams across the Trust to deliver an efficient and reliable service. You will contribute to the upkeep and routine maintenance of RPE, including PAPR systems, ensuring they are safe, functional, and ready for use at all times.
Main duties of the job
- Responsible for fit testing staff to ensure that respirators (re‑usable and disposable masks) fit their face using either the qualitative and quantitative fit testing methods in accordance with HSE INDG 479.
- Routinely replace reusable masks filters.
- Accurately record outcomes of fit testing (paper records, spreadsheets, and databases).
- Review records related to fit testing to identify staff who are due for routine retesting or have not been tested on new masks available within the Trust stock.
- Maintain Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) and fit‑testing equipment to ensure sufficient testing resources are ordered to continue fit testing staff trust‑wide.
- Communicate key messages to all wards and specialities regarding fit testing.
- Train staff with fit checking of masks.
- Train staff in usage and management of PAPRs.
- Undertake other duties as requested and appropriate to the role and/or as delegated.

Person Specification
Education and Qualification
- Fit testing training (or willingness to undertake training).
- RPE or fit testing accreditation (valid).
Knowledge and experience
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience of delivering training or supporting others.
- Strong attention to detail and problem‑solving skills.
- Knowledge of RPE and PAPR systems.
- Experience within an NHS or healthcare environment.
- Experience delivering group or one‑to‑one training.
