Job Description:

An opportunity has arisen for a Clinical / Counselling Psychologist or CBT Therapist to join our established psychological services team embedded within Adult Community Mental Health Services (ACMHS) in East Hertfordshire. The role is primarily based in Ware and will also support services in Bishops Stortford.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake psychological assessments of adults with complex mental health difficulties.
  • Deliver specialist psychological therapies, including but not limited to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), EMDR, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, family interventions, and schema therapy.
  • Provide specialist psychological consultation, formulation, support and training to the wider multi‑disciplinary service.
  • Provide supervision to junior members of the psychological services team, including Assistant Psychologists and trainee therapists.
  • Collaborate closely with the Multi‑Disciplinary Team (MDT) and psychological therapy colleagues to support the delivery of services across Southeast Hertfordshire.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Doctoral or Masters level training in clinical/counselling psychology, including specific models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology. Training must be accredited by the BPS and include current HCPC registration.
  • Alternative: A registered qualification such as nursing, social work or occupational therapy, plus postgraduate qualification training in evidence‑based psychological therapies including CBT and significant experience as a psychological therapy practitioner.
  • Professional registration (e.g., BABCP registration and eligibility for BABCP accreditation).
  • Knowledge and application of research methodology at a degree level.

Desirable Criteria

  • Additional specialist knowledge or training in psychological therapies such as CBT.
  • Experience of specialist assessment and treatment across outpatient, community, primary care and inpatient settings.
  • Minimum six months of clinical experience in adult mental health.
  • Familiarity with a wide variety of client groups across the life span and the ability to manage highly emotive and distressing situations.
  • Knowledge of whole‑life span development and its impact on emotional, psychological and mental wellbeing.
  • Experience of multi‑disciplinary team working and inter‑agency collaboration.
  • Skills in providing consultation to both professional and non‑professional groups.
  • Teaching and training experience, including presentation of complex material suitable for academic and professional settings.
  • Ability to take appropriate action to address issues or risks and to alert line management when necessary.
  • Awareness of Child and Adult Safeguarding Procedures, current NHS initiatives, and the national agenda in adult mental health.
  • Competence in maintaining accurate and complete records consistent with legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both orally and in writing, with the ability to communicate complex information effectively to clients, families, carers, and other professionals.
  • Excellent organisational and time‑management skills, with the ability to work under pressure and prioritise a clinical workload.
  • Positive problem‑solving approach and the ability to critically evaluate and integrate developments from others within one’s own area of work.
  • Appropriate UK professional registration.
