Overview
The Trainee Engineer will support the Electronic Medical Equipment (EME) team by performing electrical safety testing (EST) and planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on a variety of medical devices under the guidance of the Deputy Head of Medical Engineering. The role involves learning to work independently while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and high service quality for healthcare staff.
Responsibilities
- Carry out electrical safety testing (EST) and planned preventative maintenance (PPM) of medical equipment.
- Engage with clinical users to understand equipment faults and undertake fault‑finding.
- Check equipment performance against manufacturer specifications.
- Perform calibration, quality control, safety, commissioning, acceptance, and decommissioning tests.
- Test loaned medical devices and remove unsafe or uneconomic equipment from service, preparing it for disposal.
- Adjust maintenance schedules in response to short‑term clinical needs.
- Maintain auditable maintenance and technical records in the department’s asset management system.
- Take responsibility for tools and equipment under the postholder’s care, ensuring workshop facilities are orderly and equipment maintained.
- Liaise with manufacturers for fault information and spare‑parts support.
- Keep accurate records of all work performed and update appropriate systems.
- Inform the Deputy Head of Medical Engineering and other EME staff about equipment condition and performance.
- Participate in meetings with the Head of Medical Engineering and the wider EME team.
- Provide timely, high‑quality service to customers and keep them updated on progress.
- Follow incident‑reporting procedures and prioritise work loads.
- Stay abreast of technical developments, enrolling in continuing professional development (CPD) and attending relevant seminars and courses.
- Ensure all activities comply with the departmental QMS, relevant policies (e.g., infection control), and statutory regulations.
- Collaborate with other departments, adhering to local policies and professional standards.
- Identify and report risks to the Head of Medical Engineering.
- Operate under challenging working conditions (e.g., handling dirty or soiled equipment) and transport equipment exceeding 20 kg.
- Travel to other sites and drive as required.
Qualifications & Requirements
- HNC/HND level education or equivalent professional qualifications or experience.
- In‑depth knowledge of BS 62353 (2008) – Medical electrical equipment; recurrent testing after repair.
- Experience with EQUIP or similar asset management systems.
- OEM or manufacturer training on medical devices.
- Experience working in a patient environment.
- Registered Clinical Technologist or Scientist (or equivalent registration).
- Additional specialist training or experience through manufacturer courses.
Skills & Capabilities
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to liaise with clinical staff and management.
- Excellent IT proficiency, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and usage of a computerised asset management system.
- Proficiency in administrative and clerical duties.
- Ability to work independently, prioritise tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Physically able to lift and move equipment over 20 kg and handle challenging environments.
- Valid driving licence and willingness to travel to other sites.
