ESS Delivery and Commissioning Engineer

Location: London UK with substantial national travel

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday

About the Role

ESS Delivery and Commissioning Engineers play a pivotal role in transforming energy storage systems from blueprints into operational realities that function safely and reliably. Responsibilities focus on the mid-to-late stages of project execution, ensuring systems are installed in line with design specifications and undergo systematic testing to achieve optimal performance and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in the commissioning, project delivery, and acceptance of large-scale battery energy storage system projects.
  • Perform commissioning, troubleshooting, and defect resolution for battery containers/cabinets, including:
    • DC circuits (up to 1500V DC)
    • Auxiliary AC circuits (220V/400V AC)
    • Battery management system (BMS) communication systems
  • Assist with the commissioning of power conversion systems and energy management systems, with a basic understanding of their operating principles.
  • Support on-site issue analysis, fault diagnosis, corrective actions, and issue closure together with the project team.
  • Participate in site acceptance testing, grid connection testing, and project acceptance activities.
  • Support customer training on system operation, maintenance, and product usage.
  • Track commissioning issues through to closure and ensure projects are delivered according to schedule.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (including R&D, quality, after-sales service, and project management) to resolve site issues efficiently.
  • Comply with environment, health and safety requirements and ensure safe execution of all commissioning activities.

Requirements

  • Preferred majors include electrical engineering, communication engineering, energy engineering, renewable energy technology, or related disciplines.
  • 1-3 years of experience in electrical equipment commissioning, energy projects, or related industries.
  • Familiarity with one or more of the following areas:
    • Basic knowledge of primary and secondary electrical systems
    • Energy storage systems, photovoltaic systems, and power systems
    • Basic principles of BMS, power conversion systems, and energy management systems
    • Industrial communication protocols such as CAN and Modbus RTU/TCP
    • Communication networks and fieldbus technologies
  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and communication topology drawings.
  • Knowledge of grid-connection processes for energy storage, substation equipment, and power plant delivery procedures is preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other standard office software.
  • Strong analytical, communication, coordination, and teamwork skills.
  • Fluent in English for daily work and on-site communication; Mandarin Chinese proficiency is required.
  • Willingness to travel extensively and undertake long-term assignments at project sites overseas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in battery energy storage systems, photovoltaic, or wind power projects.
  • Low-voltage and/or high-voltage electrical certification, or equivalent electrical qualifications.
  • Experience working on international projects or in a multicultural environment.
