Principal Engineer (Payments)

Salary: £90,000 – 115,000 per year

Requirements

• Strong experience building and scaling banking payment systems, including Faster Payments, Real-Time Payments, Card payments, BACS, mobile wallets, or APIs.
• Experience leading architectural challenges, system scalability, and providing guidance to engineering teams.
• Background in Java, C#, Python, or React development, with hands‑on technical leadership experience.
• Strong background in core banking systems and platforms such as Mambu, cloud-native architectures, microservices, and DevOps practices.
• Solid understanding of regulatory, risk, and compliance requirements such as PSD2, PCI DSS, and GDPR.
• Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP, and modern data platforms.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development and implementation of a modern cloud foundation and data platform that is robust, scalable, fully automated, secure, and able to support business growth.
• Design and implement scalable, secure, high‑performing cloud‑native architectures.
• Design and build secure RESTful and GraphQL APIs, integrating with core banking systems and external services such as Open Banking platforms.
• Work with data teams to define data pipelines and scalable cloud‑based data platforms using tools such as Apache Kafka, Snowflake, or Databricks.
• Implement monitoring and observability solutions using tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, or Datadog to identify and resolve performance bottlenecks.
• Analyse and optimise existing systems to improve performance, scalability, and maintainability.
• Lead real‑time architectural decision‑making and provide technical leadership across payments platforms and APIs.
• Contribute to product roadmap design and guide engineering teams through architectural and technical challenges.

We are a long‑term trusted partner to a leading financial services corporation that is hiring a Principal Engineer to help drive the development and design of several greenfield retail banking platforms as our clients rebuild their product portfolio during their digital transformation journey. This is a senior leadership role based in London, Chatham (Kent), or Wolverhampton, with onsite work required two days per week. We offer a basic salary of up to £110,000, plus a 25% bonus and benefits including 28 days holiday, a holiday purchase scheme, occasional travel, health insurance, a 13% pension, and more.
