Role Overview

The Head of STEM will provide leadership and vision to deliver excellent student success through the development of teaching, learning and assessment, and curriculum innovation in Science, Technology and Mathematics (STEM). The role maintains quality assurance, enhances collaboration with the University and Study Group network, leads a team of STEM tutors, and ensures modules are delivered to a high standard.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Director of Campus Operations to articulate and implement a clear academic vision and programme development that meets the Centre’s strategic aims.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and policy development for HR, academic development, learning, teaching and assessment, and quality assurance.
  • Identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and develop actions to improve STEM delivery.
  • Provide inspirational leadership to the STEM team and across the Centre.
  • Lead recruitment of Science, Technology and Maths staff ensuring timeliness and compliance.
  • Participate in regular meetings with teaching staff and represent the Centre at internal and external events.
  • Attend and contribute to University Partnership Boards and Committees.
  • Take overall responsibility for academic standards, quality of learning, and accuracy of published information.
  • Support committee meetings, implement the Student Outcomes Plan, and respond to External Examiner(s). Provide reports to the Study Group Quality team.
  • Monitor actions in the Centre Action Plan and report to the Director and governance committees.
  • Implement the Centre’s Quality Assurance framework and prepare the Annual Monitoring Report.
  • Analyse data and feedback to monitor progression targets and implement remedial actions.
  • Support annual module evaluation and periodic re‑approval processes with the Study Group Quality Office and University partners.
  • Respond to feedback from the University department Link Tutors and analyse performance data to support student transition to HE.
  • Manage day‑to‑day operational tasks: staff induction, health and safety, scheduling, events, resource allocation and safeguarding responsibilities.
  • Collaborate to schedule timetables and assessments and integrate subject developments into programmes.
  • Assist the centre e‑champion to develop VLE, pre‑arrival materials and online learning opportunities.
  • Monitor student outcomes planning and report progress to the Director and committees.
  • Track key performance indicators in the STEM area and manage performance as required.
  • Ensure compliance with UKVI regulations and student attendance reporting, including regular attendance checks and issue resolution.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and post‑graduate qualification in a relevant subject (essential).
  • Post‑doctoral qualification in a relevant subject (desired).
  • Leadership and management training.
  • Experience leading a team to achieve high levels of student academic performance and outcomes against targets.
  • Experience delivering STEM subjects to international students in UK Higher or Further Education.
  • Experience planning and running complex STEM courses.
  • Experience leading the provision of academic skills within HE environments.
  • Experience in partnership working in the education sector.
  • Enthusiastic and performance‑driven team leadership.
  • Student‑centred approach to planning and delivery.
  • Ability to lead a diverse academic team.
  • Ability to operate within quality assurance frameworks.
  • Knowledge of best practice in teaching in Further and Higher Education.
  • Ability to analyse data and identify improvement areas.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work to tight deadlines.
