We’re looking for a Volunteer Services Officer to help deliver and coordinate an exciting new volunteer service based at St James’s Hospital, with travel across sites within Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust.
If you have experience in service delivery and a genuine passion for volunteering, we’d love to hear from you. Employed by Marie Curie, you’ll work as part of the Hospital Voluntary Services Team alongside the palliative care team.
Hours/Contract: This is a full‑time post – 35 hours per week – and will involve working on site at St James’s University Hospital Monday to Friday during office hours.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in establishing a new, two‑year funded Volunteer Companion Service. As our Volunteer Services Officer, you’ll be instrumental in implementing the service from the ground up, building strong relationships, recruiting volunteers, and providing high‑quality training, mentoring and ongoing support. You’ll also take the lead in promoting the service across hospital sites through local marketing and PR activity.
Marie Curie volunteers provide vital emotional and practical support to people in the last days and hours of life, as well as to those important to them. Working within St James’s Hospital and other Leeds Trust Hospitals, our End of Life Volunteers help enhance the care we offer to patients, families and carers at an incredibly important time.
In this role, you’ll manage referrals, carefully match volunteers to patients and families, and ensure volunteers feel confident, supported and valued in their work. Working alongside key stakeholders, you’ll design and deliver a comprehensive training and support programme to ensure our volunteers are fully prepared for their roles and able to make a meaningful difference.
What we’re looking for:
- Proven experience in delivering and developing new services, building strong relationships, and promoting services through local marketing and PR
- A strong track record in recruiting, training, supporting and mentoring volunteers, including the ability to design and deliver tailored training for small groups
- Experience of working directly with patients and providing compassionate support to families facing loss
- Confidence in using databases to collate, analyse and interpret data to identify trends and service improvements
- A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for business use
