Edinburgh Academicals Hockey Club is one of Edinburgh’s newest hockey clubs, welcoming young players of all abilities who want to develop their skills in a supportive environment. The club currently fields two adult teams in the East District leagues (3 and 5) and offers opportunities for competitive and social hockey. With plans to introduce indoor hockey for the 2026/27 season, the club is entering an exciting phase of growth and development. Edinburgh Academicals focuses on inclusive participation, quality coaching, and building a strong community around the sport.

Role Description

The Head Coach is a full-time, on-site role based in Edinburgh, responsible for leading the overall coaching program for the club’s adult teams and supporting player development across all levels. Day-to-day responsibilities include planning and delivering training sessions, preparing game strategies, and providing individual feedback to help players improve technical skills, fitness, and tactical understanding. The Head Coach will oversee match-day coaching, including team selection, in-game adjustments, and post-match analysis. The role also involves coordinating with club leadership on season objectives, supporting the introduction of indoor hockey, and maintaining a positive, safe, and inclusive environment.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience coaching field hockey at club, school, or regional level, with a strong understanding of modern coaching methods and player development.
  • Relevant coaching certifications, or a desire toward obtaining them.
  • Strong skills in planning and delivering structured training programs, including technical drills, tactical sessions, and fitness work.
  • Proven ability to analyse performance, give constructive feedback, and use match and training observations to adjust coaching plans.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate diverse groups of players and foster an inclusive, respectful team culture.
  • Organizational and leadership skills to manage schedules, coordinate with club committees, and oversee assistant coaches or volunteers.
  • Understanding of safeguarding, player welfare, and health and safety best practices in a sporting environment.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends in line with training and match commitments.
  • Previous playing experience at competitive club or higher level is highly beneficial.
