An exciting opportunity has arisen for suitably experienced registered nurses, mental health nurses or midwives to work at Chalmers Gender Identity Clinic (GIC). The GIC is part of Lothian Sexual and Reproductive Health Service (LSRHS) which operates from Chalmers Centre and 10 local clinics and provides Tier 4 and 5 specialist sexual health services, meeting the needs of 80,000 patient attendances per annum. Usual hours of work are Monday to Friday 08.30‑16.30 or 12.00‑20.00 with opportunity to do long days.

Responsibilities

The post holder will predominantly spend their time working within the Gender Identity Clinic, with opportunities to work in the wider services offered by the main Chalmers Centre. Training will be offered to gain an understanding and knowledge of the assessment, treatment and review of patients accessing gender identity services, enabling autonomous management of initial and ongoing care of service users. The post holder will also be expected to participate in the care of people requiring a variety of sexual and reproductive health issues and share in the management and leadership of the nursing team.

Essential Criteria

  • First‑level registered nurse, mental health nurse or midwife with current NMC registration; post‑registration qualification in sexual and reproductive health; minimum of two years post‑registration experience in sexual health, gender identity/trans‑healthcare or another directly related area. A clear interest in working in gender identity services is essential.
  • Independent non‑medical prescribing qualification or willingness to work towards this; comfort with assessing and documenting psychosocial aspects of care.
  • Evidence of a non‑judgemental, person‑centred approach, ability to use initiative and work independently; effective communication and highly developed clinical consultation skills; willingness to work unsocial hours and travel independently to local clinics throughout Lothian.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work across all areas of the LSRHS, and to deliver care in a range of different ways (e.g. via telephone or video consultations).

Desirable Criteria

  • Evidence of teamwork and leadership; competence in contraceptive implant insertion and removal.
