Overview
We’re transforming how highways and public realm services are delivered across Herefordshire. As a Principal Highway Drainage Engineer you will play a key role in shaping the future of essential services, working to maintain roads, green spaces, and ensure safety and cleanliness of streets.
Responsibilities
- Manage the county’s highway drainage system, ensuring timely investigation and resolution of reported issues.
- Raise jobs through partner contractors or coordinate with water companies via annual programmes.
- Develop and deliver a county‑wide gully and drainage asset cleansing programme.
- Work closely with the Flood Risk Management team to mitigate flooding risks and with the Road Safety and Traffic Management team to develop plans for extreme weather events.
Qualifications and Experience
- Knowledge and experience of investigating and resolving highway drainage system problems.
- Experience of highway drainage design and designing and implementing SuDS.
- Comprehensive knowledge of key highway legislation, including the Highways Act 1980, and flood risk management legislation such as the Flood and Water Management Act 2010, Flood Risk Regulations 2009, Land Drainage Act 1991, etc.
- Experience in working positively with key stakeholders and communities.
- Experience reviewing highway drainage plans within the development management process and a willingness to develop highway drainage schemes and progress new projects.
