Overview

An exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic gardener to work at one of the National Trust’s most unique gardens and join our expert team of staff and volunteers for a 6‑month period. As a Gardener for the National Trust, you will be a hands‑on member of the garden team, involved in every aspect of gardening at Sizergh, helping to maintain the highest standards of horticulture and improve the visitor experience across the garden and wider estate.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out daily checks to ensure the garden is safe for visitors.
  • Perform routine horticultural tasks such as weeding, pruning, mulching and plant propagation.
  • Operate machinery including hedge cutters, leaf blowers, lawnmowers, tractors, chainsaws, and rotary and cylinder mowers.
  • Lead a team of volunteers and support the wider team of gardeners.
  • Work in all weathers, maintaining equipment and providing training to new staff and volunteers.
  • Manage time, plan work and meet deadlines.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Enthusiastic horticulturist and hands‑on gardener with experience in hard landscaping.
  • Good knowledge of plants and a keen eye for detail.
  • Experience operating gardening machinery, including tractors, chainsaws, rotary and cylinder mowers.
  • Full driving licence.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, confident working both independently and with volunteers.
  • Able to keep to time, plan work and meet deadlines.

Contract & Salary

Salary: £22,089.60 pro rata (FTE £27,612 per annum). Fixed‑term contract until31December2026, part‑time 30hours (4 days per week) including bank holidays. Weekend working on a rotary basis. Secondment opportunities may be considered.
