Job Summary

Band 8a Advanced Practitioner Sonographer at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB). Lead and coordinate the Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) Surveillance Clinic and Liver and Renal Transplant Surveillance pathways, and act as Deputy to the Ultrasound Modality Lead.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the HCC Surveillance Clinic, overseeing the service pathway, ensuring accurate, timely imaging, rapid reporting, and optimisation of booking systems in partnership with the liver clinic.
  • Act as a clinical specialist for transplant surveillance ultrasound, evaluating graft health, vascular patency and post‑transplant complications and providing autonomous scanning and reporting for complex caseloads.
  • Deputise for the Ultrasound Modality Lead, managing day‑to‑day operations, staff scheduling, skill‑mix reviews, and ensuring adherence to waiting‑list target standards.
  • Provide advanced autonomous practice, delivering expert scanning and interpretive reporting on an independent basis for highly complex cases.

Qualifications

  • General science‑based education to O and A level, with at least one science‑based A level or equivalent.
  • D.C.R. (R) or B.Sc. Radiography, S.R.R. DMU or a Post‑Graduate Diploma in Ultrasound, with specialist knowledge gained through postgraduate study or equivalent experience.
  • HCPC registration.

Experience

  • Highly specialised ultrasound experience at an advanced level, e.g., interventional procedures or advanced skills beyond a Band 7 sonographer.
  • Experience managing a senior staff group and evidence of role extension, leading audit or research projects.

  • Understanding of NHS development and modernisation, particularly in imaging and workforce education.
  • Leadership and authority within the specialty, maintaining motivation within a team.
  • Professional and courteous conduct in difficult or contentious situations.
  • Positive application of the radiographers code of conduct.
  • Innovation within the healthcare profession.

Compensation & Working Pattern

Band 8a. Salary £57,528.00 to £64,750.00 per year. Contract: Permanent. Working pattern: Full‑time, flexible working.
