Electronics Systems Design Engineer

Company Overview
The Scientific Instruments Group is a small UK‑based group of companies; the largest manufacturing company within the group is XCAM Ltd. XCAM is a rapidly growing technology business that manufactures highly bespoke, custom, low‑volume digital cameras for scientific and increasingly for space applications.
Responsibilities
- Research, development and design of solutions for new digital camera systems.
- Modification of existing products or processes.
- Work on multiple projects simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines.
- Contribute to all aspects of system design from concept through to build and test.
- Report to Engineering Director and collaborate with the XCAM Development Engineering Team.
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree in Electronics.
- Three or more years in a design engineering role.
- High‑speed digital design with microprocessors and FPGAs.
- Power supply design (linear and switched‑mode).
- Low‑noise analog design using DACs and ADCs.
- FPGA firmware design for Xilinx Artix‑A7 and Polarfire FPGAs.
- Embedded software design.
- In‑house prototyping and bench testing of PCBs and circuits.
- Experience with electronics design peer and architecture reviews, and design feasibility evaluation.
- Creation and maintenance of specifications and documentation.

- Self‑motivation, curiosity and enthusiasm for new technologies.
- Good communication and documentation skills.
Preferred Skills
- Hardware and firmware design using Xilinx/Intel/Microchip or Polarfire FPGAs.
- Embedded software design with Microblaze.
- Practical knowledge of Vivado IDE and Microchip Libro IDE.
- Experience designing with CCD or CMOS sensors.
- ECAD user (preferably PadS Professional).
- Awareness of manufacturing standards such as IPC and ECSS.
- Knowledge of project management and planning tools.
Employment Offer
- Full‑time, permanent position (Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm) in Northampton, UK.
- Salary negotiable based on experience.
- Pension up to +7.5% company contribution, plus sick pay.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
