Health, Safety & Environmental Manager
Location: Belfast Contract: Permanent, Full-time Hours: Monday to Friday Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Based primarily at the company’s Belfast operation, the successful candidate will take responsibility for the development, implementation and continuous improvement of health, safety and environmental standards across the business. Occasional travel to other operational sites throughout Northern Ireland may be required.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced HSE professional to join the senior management team of a busy, operationally focused organisation and play a key role in promoting a positive and proactive safety culture.
The Role
The HSE Manager will act as the organisation’s competent person for health and safety, providing professional guidance and leadership to senior management, operational managers and employees.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Developing and implementing the organisation’s health, safety and environmental strategy.
- Ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, regulations and industry standards.
- Leading and supporting the health and safety function across operational sites.
- Developing, reviewing and maintaining HSE policies, procedures and safe systems of work.
- Completing and reviewing risk assessments for operational activities.
- Establishing and managing a programme of site inspections and internal audits.
- Monitoring safety performance, incident data, audit findings and relevant KPIs.
- Reporting on HSE performance to senior management and recommending improvements.
- Leading investigations into accidents, incidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences.
- Identifying root causes and ensuring appropriate corrective and preventative actions are completed.
- Supporting the organisation’s ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 accreditation and audit processes.
- Promoting a positive safety culture and encouraging engagement at all levels of the business.
- Delivering employee inductions, toolbox talks and health and safety training.
- Identifying training needs and coordinating additional HSE training where required.
- Working closely with operational managers, employees, contractors, external auditors and regulatory bodies.
- Continually identifying opportunities to improve safety processes, compliance and employee awareness.
Essential Criteria
Applicants should have:
- A NEBOSH qualification or an equivalent occupational health and safety qualification.
- Previous experience within a health and safety supervisory, advisory or management position.
- Experience within logistics, port operations, maritime services, warehousing, transport or a similarly operational environment.
- Practical knowledge of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards, accreditation and audit processes.
- Experience developing, implementing and maintaining health and safety policies and procedures.
- Experience completing risk assessments, audits, inspections and incident investigations.
- The ability to develop and deliver effective health and safety training.
- Strong communication and influencing skills, with the confidence to work with employees and managers at all levels.
- A high level of computer literacy, including strong Microsoft Excel skills.
- A full UK driving licence.
