Consultant Psychiatrist in Community Old Age Psychiatry – Fenland

Salary £109,725 – £145,478 per annum plus £40,000 Recruitment and Retention Premium (T&Cs apply).

The successful candidate will work alongside community-based colleagues to provide assessment and psychiatric treatment for older adults within the Fenland community across a largely rural area.

The Fenland OPMH service received 912 referrals in the past 12 months, with an average of 76 referrals per month, including approximately 9 psychiatry outpatients and 36 memory assessments.

Main duties of the job

Clinical

  • Lead the multidisciplinary team in providing excellent psychiatric care.
  • Provide assessment, diagnosis, and treatment plans.
  • Lead weekly MDT meetings and ensure prompt reviews of acutely unwell patients.
  • Work closely with the CRHTT OP, community teams and liaison services as patients move between these teams.

The Trust encourages participation in clinical research.

Leadership

  • Provide clinical leadership for the Older Peoples Services.
  • Support involvement in regional and national groups, subject to discussion with the medical director and, as necessary, the chief executive officer.

Teaching / Education

Contribute to the psychiatry postgraduate teaching programme, undergraduate medical student teaching programme, and staff training within the wider MDT. Provide CPD support and encourage training and supervision of trainees. Fellows encouraged to conduct journal clubs, case discussions and management meetings via Teams. CPD time and study leave budget available. Maintain good standing for Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD.

Administration

Work with CPFT to achieve agreed performance targets. Contribute to collection and monitoring of clinical outcome data for service development and commissioning. Participate in audit, patient information systems, and ensure data entry follows service policies and guidance. Work in accordance with trust policies.

Management

  • Work with the Service Manager and Clinical Director to manage the Older Peoples Acute Care System.
  • Contribute to planning and further development of Older Peoples Mental Health Services and wider community service.
  • Attend meetings relevant to the service interests.

Research

Support the CPFT research endeavour where possible, with potential funding for research projects, including involvement as principal investigator for clinical trials into dementia and late life mental health disorders.

Clinical Governance

Act within local and national agreed protocols and actively engage in clinical governance.

On‑call

  • May opt to take part in the consultant out‑of‑hours on‑call rota (Category A). On‑call is remunerated at 3%, supported by core and senior trainees. Covers older adult and general adult; separate CAMHS rota exists.

Other duties

  • May be required to carry out other duties as assigned by the Trust, with agreement.

Accountability

Accountable to the Clinical Director in the Directorate (currently Dr Anna Forrest) and to the Trust Board via the Trust Executive Medical Director.

Job Planning & Appraisal

Participate in revalidation and annual appraisal under the supervision of the Medical Director and Responsible Officer. Access to job planning software for online submission.

Person Specification

Education / Qualifications

  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register.
  • S12/AC approved.
  • CCT in relevant speciality (CESR or equivalent considered).
  • Valid UK driving licence and willingness to drive.
  • MD or PhD.
  • Postgraduate qualification in medical education.

Experience

  • Experience working in a community‑facing team.
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to gaining UK CCT in Old Age.
  • Experience of research and service development.

Characteristics

  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Understanding of service context and ability to develop services in a changing environment with tight budgets.
  • Effective teachers and trainers capable of guiding own continuing education and training.
