Job Summary
Senior Project Engineer – HV Transmission & Distribution.
Accountable for end‑to‑end project delivery including initiation, planning, design, delivery, monitoring, commissioning and close‑out.
Responsibilities
- Support the Project Director / Senior Project Manager to deliver the project.
- Prepare internal and external project reports and liaise with engineers and stakeholders.
- Initiate scope, information and configuration management principles and collaborate closely with tendering and design teams.
- Ensure that direct reports provide information enabling cost‑effective decisions aligned with strategy.
- Co‑ordinate and maintain health, safety & environmental compliance.
- Assume responsibility for the safety and welfare of the general public, employees and supply chain around the project.
- Conduct periodic safety & environmental tours and promote safety initiatives.
- Produce plans and guide the team to achieve goals and development aspirations.
- Develop high‑performing teams and support internal training through guidance, motivation and empowerment.
- Specify, understand, develop and implement technical information and drawings into delivery.
- Oversee the entire life cycle of the project from start to close and through the warranty period.
- Lead the value engineering process and the development of the design deliverables programme.
- Capture learning and best practice from bids/projects and share across the business stream and organisation.
- Support BIM management during the bid stage ensuring supply‑chain awareness of BIM requirements.
- Liaise with statutory bodies and authorities such as town planning, building control and services (e.g., gas and water).
- Manage change control and ensure designers meet all specifications.
- Champion effective reporting routines, communicate expectations, and maintain accurate project records.
- Own the budget, maintain cost control, improve margins, manage cash flow and identify cost‑recovery opportunities.
- Analyse, appraise and implement commercial elements.
- Lead risk and opportunity reviews, log, and escalates unresolved issues.
- Write and review RAMS and accept subcontractor RAMS.
- Support accident/incident investigations and implement safety improvements.
Qualifications
- Experience working in a complex project environment with multiple stakeholders.
- Experience in design management and/or construction project management.
- Ability to articulate the business vision and inspire a shared vision among the team.
- HND or degree in Engineering, Management or Construction discipline.
- Experience on National Grid substation projects (desirable).
- Current driving licence.
- Track record of project delivery.
- Good understanding of standard contract forms.
- Proficiency in commercial and project‑management communications.
- Experience implementing safe systems of work.
