Job Description

We are looking for a Lead Supportability Engineer with strong industry experience, ideally in Electronics/Hardware or Systems. The role takes responsibility for the full lifecycle of a programme – from Bid, Development, Production through to Customer Support and finally disposal – and works closely with cross‑department teams such as Systems, Electronics, Mechanical, Software, Test Equipment, Quality and Industrial to identify problems early.

Your Impact

  • Lead and develop a team of Supportability Engineers to deliver reliability, maintainability, testability, safety, and production support activities across the product life cycle.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers, Operations and Project Engineering Managers to advise on Supportability requirements, provide analysis and guidance.
  • Ensure milestones are met on schedule and within budget while maintaining technical quality.
  • Provide expert input into Life Cycle Management reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Schedule, manage and chair Sector Project Cost Review Boards (PCRBs).

Key Technical Responsibilities

  • Reliability Analysis – develop component to system level models, use Reliability Block Diagram methodology on electronic, power, RF, digital and mechanical systems.
  • Reliability Testing & Simulation – create models, develop reliability growth plans and identify failure modes.
  • Maintainability Analysis – perform modular to system level analysis addressing Human Factors and Maintenance Task Analysis.
  • Testability Analysis – conduct FMECA, work with hardware engineers to validate fault detection and isolation.
  • Product Safety – carry out hazard and environmental impact analysis and provide input to hazard log, safety case and fault tree analysis.
  • Production Support – analyze failure data (FRACAS), identify root cause and corrective action.
  • Support Strategy – develop product in‑service support strategy using life‑cycle cost modelling.

Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required

  • Degree in a relevant engineering or science discipline.
  • Industry experience in defence or related fields.
  • Strong experience leading and developing engineering teams.
  • Commercial and business awareness.
  • Experience in engineering management and delivery of project work packages.
  • Ability to manage complex situations with sound judgment and balance conflicting challenges.

Preferred Experience

  • Hands‑on experience supporting products throughout their life cycle.
  • Experience influencing design through DfX principles (Design for Supportability, Reliability, Maintenance, Testability and Safety).
  • Experience with FMEA/FMECA.
  • Knowledge of UK and international safety and reliability standards.
  • Availability analysis and modelling.

Tools & Packages

  • MS Office, PTC Windchill, MATLAB/Simulink, Power BI, JIRA and Python.

Security Clearance

This role requires pre‑employment screening in line with the UK Government’s Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS). Additional Personnel Security Controls such as National Security Vetting (NSV) may apply, including eligibility for The Security Check (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV).
