Overview

This is a substantive post for which 10 PAs are available. The post holder will provide consultant psychiatric input to the 10 PAs (6 PA’s GMAIC, 4 PA’s Crisis service) across the week. Out of hours, the consultant input comes from the medical on‑call rota. The post holder will develop the role with the acute care team, liaising with community CAMHS and inpatient services collaboratively.

Responsibilities

  • Provide medical oversight and clinical consultation to the Crisis team and GMAIC for assessment, management and treatment of young people presenting with mental health disorders.
  • Join the team and contribute to face‑to‑face assessments for complex, uncertain and significant risk presentations, including young people requiring assessment under the Mental Health Act.
  • Inform clinical judgments on the appropriateness and suitability for admission to inpatient services; where admission is not clinically required or appropriate, provide guidance and make alternate recommendations including the use of crisis services and offer follow‑up.
  • Provide supervision to NMP within Crisis and GMAIC service.
  • Work collectively with community CAMHS and inpatient services across Greater Manchester, and with adult mental services for transition of young people reaching 18 and requiring ongoing care.
  • Liaise with inpatient services, attend escalation meetings and provide second opinion to neighbouring GMAIC teams when required.
  • Lead the clinical team in acute care service, providing emergency, urgent and elective multi‑disciplinary assessment and treatment for young people in emotional and mental health crisis.
  • Conduct comprehensive psychosocial multi‑axial diagnostic assessment, formulation and management; assess psychiatric and psychological comorbidity; care for comorbid physical health needs; provide psychoeducation and psychopharmacological interventions.
  • Provide consultation to referrals from community CAMHS services, paediatric wards, liaison services and other mental health services for young people with complex mental health care needs.
  • Utilise the legal framework such as the Mental Health Act, the Children Act and the Mental Capacity Act when required.
  • Maintain appropriate clinical records, confidentiality and administration in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, participate in and help to lead in the management of referrals, assessment and treatment, follow‑up reviews and discharge.
  • Provide effective handover to borough mental health teams, Local Authorities and commissioners.
  • Provide medical consultation and advice to clinical staff within acute care pathways and contribute to the clinical supervision of other practitioners in the pathway.
  • Lead in the areas of medical practice in particular, and mental health practice in general using a clinical governance framework.

Qualifications

  • Possession of Common Surgical Training (CCT) in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, or within 6 months of achieving this, or entered on the GMC Specialist Register Section 12 Approval under the Mental Health Act 183, or be eligible for approval.
  • Demonstrable competency across the PMETB approved curriculum for higher training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
  • Registered for CPD with the RCPsych.
  • Experience in the use of the Mental Health Act (1983).

Desirable

  • Other postgraduate degrees such as MSc, MD, etc.
  • Specialist interest and expertise in the area of mental health.
  • Commitment to training and teaching, including experience as an education supervisor of trainees in psychiatry.
  • Leadership skills, clarity and ability to develop and improve the service.
  • Ability to work clearly and effectively across organisational boundaries, creatively with teams around complex and challenging client groups.
  • Evidence of audit activity, published audit or research.
  • Excellent communication skills and cultural competency; awareness of key legislation (NSF, NICE, MHA, MCA, Children Act).
