Overview
The Endoscopy Support Worker (ESW) will participate in the decontamination, traceability, and maintenance of endoscopes and other specialised equipment used in endoscopic procedures. Working under the supervision of qualified nursing staff, the ESW will support the multidisciplinary team in delivering high‑quality patient care within a JAG accredited bowel cancer screening unit in South East London. The unit currently has 4 procedure rooms and is expanding to meet increasing demand.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the decontamination and reprocessing of endoscopy equipment in accordance with local and national guidelines.
- Maintain accurate traceability records of all endoscopes, accessories, and ancillary equipment.
- Assist with quality assurance checks and participate in testing of rinse water.
- Support qualified staff in monitoring agreed standards of practice within the unit.
- Participate in the Trust’s Individual Performance Review process.
- Demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional development through a Personal Development Plan.
- Participate in local clinical supervision and attend designated study days.
- Complete relevant training activities and assessments as required.
- Assist qualified nursing staff and support the multidisciplinary team in patient care.
Qualifications & Skills
- General education to a good standard.
- Completion of National Decontamination Training and Endoscopy Training (e‑learning).
- Experience working within an endoscopy unit.
- Strong teamwork and initiative skills, able to work under supervision and independently under guidance.
- Knowledge of infection control and decontamination principles.
- Experience working in the NHS.
- Computer literacy and basic IT skills.
- Good numeracy, literacy, verbal and written communication skills.
- Manual dexterity with an aptitude for handling complex equipment.
- Willingness to learn, take instruction, and keep equipment in good working order.
- Ability to work calmly under pressure, prioritise tasks, and meet deadlines.
Shift Patterns
Flexible work schedule required, including late‑evening duties, unsocial hours and varied shift patterns.
