Job Description:

We currently have 2 posts available; 1 x full time position and 1 x WTE 0.4 (2 days per week).

Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory reception duties, including checking sample quality, ensuring appropriate samples are received for requested tests, assigning laboratory numbers to samples, and entering requests into the laboratory computer system.
  • Answer telephone and personal enquiries, file documents, send out printed reports, and issue stocks to service users.
  • Obtain blood from patients, perform daily maintenance tasks, conduct some laboratory testing, and run the pre‑analytics analyser.
  • Be available to support the 24/7 service as required.
  • Receive, sort, number and pre‑analytically prepare potentially infectious clinical specimens.
  • Ensure correct samples and test codes are accurately assigned.
  • Answer and make enquiries to/from wards, departments, and GP surgeries.
  • Communicate professionally with laboratory staff, hospital staff, and other service users.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information at all times.
  • Perform receptionist duties with patients, visitors, and other hospital staff.
  • Perform simple analytical processes under the supervision of qualified staff, including near‑patient testing.
  • Participate in the effective running of the department by completing tasks assigned by the line manager appropriate to the grade.
  • Ensure all tasks are performed to the highest standard, timely, in accordance with current policies, relevant regulatory requirements, and scientific principles.
  • Follow laboratory quality procedures.
  • Assist in the safe disposal of used specimens and waste products.

Qualifications

  • Good numeracy and literacy skills, demonstrated by a minimum GCSE grade C in English and Mathematics or equivalent qualifications.
  • GCSE or equivalent in at least one science subject.
  • Ability to work under pressure to a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures and meet or exceed minimum performance standards.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills at all levels.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Good general computer literacy and ability to input and extract information from IT systems.
  • Previous administrative or customer service experience.
