Role Overview

You will be part of our team of clinical imaging assistants working closely with radiographers, consultant radiologists, surgeons and other healthcare professionals. The role is busy, varied and rewarding. Your day‑to‑day duties will include:

  • preparing patients for examination and accompanying patients to and from scanner rooms
  • providing reassurance to patients
  • carrying out patient safety screening checks
  • making sure the working environment is clean and hygienic
  • helping to maintain equipment and reporting any faults
  • assisting radiographers and radiologists with procedures
  • clerical tasks such as data input, image transfer, ordering stock of consumable items and patient reception services

The role involves working a compressed shift pattern each week, scheduled between 8:00am and 6:00pm on a 7‑day working week by rota. Each shift includes a 30‑minute unpaid break.

We also welcome applications from candidates seeking part‑time hours, with a minimum commitment of 19 hours per week (equivalent to two 9.5‑hour shifts on a 7‑day rota).

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Operational duties – maintain positive partnership with NHS hospitals and the LCS programme teams; assist organisation and smooth running of day‑to‑day scanning lists; liaise with multidisciplinary teams and programme managers; respond to requests of the LCS operations manager, PET/CT and CT manager and senior radiographers; ensure continuity of LCS services across locations in line with Charity values.
  • Reception duties – meet and greet patients arriving for imaging; check patient personal data and obtain consent; schedule appointments if necessary; answer e‑mail and telephone enquiries; provide reassurance, emotional and physical support throughout the unit; give information about examinations and follow‑up; support, welcome and assist relatives and friends; escort patients to and from mobile scanners.
  • Patient care – help patients prepare for an examination (undressing, reassurance, explanation); aid in positioning patients on scanners; maintain privacy and dignity; conduct consent and screening safety checks; be attentive to individual needs pre‑ and post‑procedure.
  • Safety & compliance – work in accordance with CT local rules, systems of work and operational procedures; maintain safety at all times; operate safely in accordance with all health and safety policies; adhere to Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017 (IRMER) as amended 2024; provide basic life support in emergency situations; perform and record observations; complete medical documentation.
  • Radiology information systems – data entry using RIS, data sharing and checking image transfer with CIMAR, PACS, IEP and other associated systems; keep accurate, legible, comprehensive medical records; support workflow process improvements under radiographer supervision.
  • Audit & quality – assist in clinical audits, collate data and generate KPI reports; finish end‑of‑day reports; support BS 70000 and ISO accreditations; assist during external visits by Trust or industry stakeholders such as CQC, BS70000 inspectors.
  • Training & development – support induction, education and clinical training for colleagues; maintain up‑to‑date personal CPD records; participate in appraisal and mandatory training.
  • Infection control – liaise with Infection Control Lead, monitor cleanliness, complete checklists in line with the infection prevention and control programme.
  • Stock & resources – check consumables and maintain levels; manage laundry supplies, beverage supplies, stationery and marketing literature; dispense drugs as a designated practitioner under the direction of a medical practitioner or appointed practitioner; remove IV cannulas according to policy.
  • Teamwork – collaborate with other departments; mentor junior staff; uphold professional integrity; comply with corporate policy; ensure confidentiality and data protection.

Qualifications and Certifications

  • Minimum 5 GCSEs (Grades A–C) including English, Maths and a Science subject or demonstrable relevant experience
  • Basic Life Support Certification
  • First Aid at Work Certification
  • Fire Marshal Certification
  • CARe Certification
  • NVQ Level II in Health and Social Care or Level 2 Diploma in Clinical Healthcare Support or equivalent experience
  • Proven experience in healthcare and patient‑focussed services
  • Experience dealing with the general public, relatives and carers
  • Experience working with unwell patients and personal care assistance
  • Strong customer service skills with confidentiality, discretion and trustworthiness
  • Ability to relate to people of all ages and backgrounds
  • Excellent listening skills; ability to work independently and take responsibility for own actions
  • Full driving licence (may not be essential depending on location)
