We, Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, are recruiting a full-time substantive Consultant Psychiatrist. This role is based on the Neighbourhood Mental Health Team Model in Bury and is a community post.

There are many opportunities to contribute to service redesign, teaching of medical and nursing staff, and involvement in ongoing research projects. Consultants will also engage with local service user and carer groups.

Main duties of the jobThe Neighbourhood Mental Health Team psychiatrist will offer expert advice to GPs for patients not currently open to secondary care mental health services, advising on medication, signposting to other services and specialties, as well as providing clinical management and diagnostic advice. The service will be provided daily, Monday to Friday.

The post holder will work with the Neighbourhood Mental Health service in Bury, providing clinical leadership to the multidisciplinary team and developing the service through managerial tasks such as expanding the team, delivering training to new members, and championing the service with stakeholders.

Responsibilities include: providing high-quality mental health care for adults with severe and enduring mental health problems within the community; working closely with other teams and consultants to ensure coherent care; supporting service development and attending local and divisional meetings.

Working for our organisationThe post holder will be based at the Irwell Unit, Fairfield General Hospital. Bury operates an inpatient–outpatient model and is staffed by six full‑time Consultants in Adult Psychiatry. Each Community Consultant is allocated a Junior Doctor, with support from advanced practitioners and sessional input from a specialist doctor.

Eligibility and requirements

Satisfactory medical screening prior to taking up appointment

MBChB or equivalent

Must be on the GMC Specialist Register or be eligible to be on the GMC Specialist Register

Higher psychiatric training or its equivalent

Section 12(2) approval under the Mental Health Act 1983 or be eligible for approval (Approved Clinician status or eligible)

Evidence of teaching and training abilities

Possession of MRCPsych or equivalent qualification (e.g., MSc, MD, MRCP)

Possession of CCT or be within 6 months of achieving this

Experience with detention of patients under the MHA (1983) and writing reports for Mental Health Review Tribunals

Current or past educational supervisor of a basic trainee and a specialist registrar

Use of a car or access to mobility for traveling across the Trust footprint

Evidence of leading service development elsewhere

Ability to travel across the Trust footprint in line with service needs
