Health Care Assistant – Llanfairpwll Health Centre
We welcome applications from experienced Healthcare Assistants as well as individuals who are new to healthcare and demonstrate the right values, attitude and willingness to learn. Full training and support will be provided for the right candidate.
We are looking for a team player who can offer flexibility in their working hours and assist with covering shifts when needed to ensure continuity of patient care.
About us
We are a friendly rural GP practice serving approximately 8,200 patients across two surgeries in the beautiful South West Anglesey area: Llanfairpwll Health Centre and Meddygfa Penbryn Surgery. Our clinical team consists of 7 GPs, 1 Advanced Nurse Practitioner, experienced Practice Nurses and Healthcare Assistants, supported by a highly skilled and well-established administrative team. We use the EMIS clinical system and are committed to delivering high-quality patient care.
Responsibilities
- Assist the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of patient care in accordance with guidelines and protocols.
- Perform phlebotomy and anticoagulation testing during morning clinics.
- Conduct ECG recording, wound care, health checks, basic dressings and immunisation testing during afternoon clinics.
- Maintain cleanliness and infection control in treatment rooms and consultation areas.
- Stock clinical consumables and manage inventory, ordering supplies, and maintaining a log of medical equipment.
- Record and action INR testing using Coaguchec and STAR software.
- Take and log vital signs (blood pressure, height, weight, urine checks) and conduct COPD screening.
- Maintain vaccine fridge temperatures and prepare specimens for laboratory transport.
- Assist GPs during minor surgeries and support procedures such as nasal, skin, and swabs taking.
- Support the administration of vaccinations under Patient Specific Directions.
- Assist with the organisation and promotion of periodic vaccine campaigns.
- Prepare patient searches and manage EMIS system records.
- Actively support infection control, hand hygiene, sharps safety, waste management and environmental cleanliness.
- Assist with practice clinic management: register maintenance, sending letters, making telephone calls, producing patient labels.
- Perform 24‑hour ambulatory blood‑pressure monitoring using handheld devices.
- Conduct simple wound care assessments and dressings.
- Offer basic dietary, lifestyle and weight‑management advice.
- Summarise clinical notes and assist in coding letters that have been scanned to medical records.
- Update STAR software to the latest available version across the practice.

- Implement and lead on promotion and management of health and safety and infection control as defined in practice policies.
- Use personal security systems and observe national standards of infection control.
- Ensure safe management of specimen processes, PPE, hand hygiene, and sharps.
- Identify and report hazards, maintain cleanliness and conduct periodic training.

Skills and Experience
- Previous experience as a Healthcare Assistant, Care Assistant or similar patient‑facing role.
- NVQ/QCF Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent).
- Venepuncture trained.
- Knowledge of EMIS software and basic IT skills (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Good communication, organisational and teamwork skills.
- Willingness to undertake training and adapt to varying shift patterns.
- Basic IT skills and ability to keep accurate records.
- Flexible approach to working hours, covering shifts and providing leave/sickness cover.
Qualifications
- GCSE grade 1 to C in English & Maths.
