Role: Club & Participation Assistant Intern

Department: Sport Development

Reporting to: Senior Sport Officers

Location: Hybrid (ideally one day a week in the office in Leamington Spa)

Salary: Based on the Real Living Wage

Contract Type: Part-time, 30 hours per week, Fixed Term 9-month contract. Work timings to be agreed over 4-5 days per week.

About the role:

The Club & Participation Assistant Intern will play a key role in supporting the ongoing development of clubs and participants, especially those engaged in the VI Active Together programme.

This role bridges the gap between initial intensive support from the Senior Sport and Workforce Officers and the clubs becoming fully self-sufficient.

The postholder will act as a consistent point of contact, helping individuals to build their confidence and maintain momentum as well as support clubs to continue to grow their provision for blind and partially sighted participants.

The Intern will be supported to increase the club details across our online Activity Finder.

Main responsibilities:

1. Club Engagement & Relationship Management

  • Build positive relationships with club leads and volunteers
  • Act as a regular point of contact for clubs transitioning out of direct Senior Officer support
  • Provide ongoing encouragement and guidance as clubs develop
  • Direct clubs to services and training that will enhance their offer for blind and partially sighted people
  • Deliver regular updates, resources, and opportunities to clubs (e.g. funding, training, best practice)
  • Support the creation and distribution of club communications
  • Ensure clubs are aware of relevant opportunities to enhance their offer
  • Act as a point of contact and signposting for new participants in sport and physical activity
  • Regularly engage with participants to understand what motivates them to continue to engage in sport what, if any, are the barriers to participation
  • Keep records to monitor learning, impact, communication and information sharing

3. Monitoring & Support

  • Check in with clubs to understand progress, challenges, and development needs
  • Identify any risks or concerns and escalate to Senior Officers where appropriate
  • Help clubs stay on track with their development plans
  • Help individuals to remain on their sporting journeys with encouragement and advice when needed
  • Maintain records of individuals’ sporting journeys

4. Development Support

  • Signpost clubs to training, resources, and partner organisations
  • Signpost individuals to local sporting events, clubs and opportunities
  • Maintain records of club engagement and progress
  • Provide feedback and insights to inform programme improvement
  • Support the Senior Officers when best practice and/or positive experiences have been identified
  • Support wider programme delivery where appropriate

Person Specification

  • This role has a Genuine Occupational Requirement that the successful applicant be a person who is blind or partially sighted, in line with The Equality Act 2010
  • Interns need to be able to travel to the Thomas Pocklington Trust (TPT) Hub in London for development events throughout the course of the internship programme (costs covered by TPT)
  • Having not previously undertaken the Get Set Progress internship programme
  • Successful applicants must have the Right to Work in the UK for the duration of the internship. Sponsorship will not be provided.

  • A willingness to learn and develop within a community sport environment

Desirable Personal Specifications

  • Ability to travel to occasional events to support Senior Officers when required
  • Confident telephone manner
