The Team

The Software Engineering and Systems Integration team in the UK works across Boeing Defence, Commercial Airplanes, Global Services and Uncrewed technologies. The team develops Synthetic Environment Sub-systems, Mission Systems Capability, Autonomous Behaviours, Ground Control Systems, Technical Publications and in-house tools for Defence platforms, and supports Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) Seat Certification.

The Role (BCA Seats Software Certification)

Senior Seat Systems Software Certification Engineer based in Bristol, UK. Supports the growing BCA Seats statement of work, ensuring aircraft meet or exceed safety standards set by EASA and/or FAA. Drives certification process against DO‑178B/C objectives and works across all System-of-Interest departments.

Hiring Details

  • Local hire, Bristol, UK. Pay and benefits set at local level.
  • Hybrid arrangement, 3 days in office.
  • Business travel up to 25% of working time, including UK and international sites.

Position Responsibilities

  • Lead software certification strategy and execution for seat-related embedded systems.
  • Serve as primary technical authority for DO‑178C/ED‑12C based certification, coordinating cross‑functional and supplier activities.
  • Mentor junior engineers, drive process improvements, and represent Boeing in regulatory reviews and supplier negotiations.
  • Review supplier software lifecycle data throughout all software lifecycle phases.
  • Oversee supplier software development and performance of audits, ensuring deliverables meet Boeing and regulatory standards.
  • Verify compliance and submit technical documentation needed for certification.
  • Collaborate with regulatory representatives, EUMs suppliers and global Boeing sites to maintain design compliance.
  • Prepare and maintain certification packages and software compliance documentation, responding to inquiries.
  • Develop and maintain architectures, requirements, algorithms, interfaces and designs for software systems.
  • Automate certification processes.
  • Provide subject‑matter expertise during reviews and regulator meetings, traveling to supplier sites, labs and regulator sessions as needed.

Basic Qualifications (Required)

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in engineering, engineering technology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.
  • Ability to obtain security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired)

  • 10+ years applying RTCA DO‑178 (B/C/D) in airborne systems and equipment certification, with emphasis on embedded software.
  • 5+ years in software lifecycle data items and standards such as DO‑330, DO‑331.
  • Experience leading software safety analyses, supporting system safety cases, and proposing mitigation strategies.
  • Prepared, presented and defended certification artifacts to FAA/EASA/CAAC.
  • Experience leading supplier oversight, audits, and resolving issues.
  • Strong background in real‑time embedded software, RTOS, device drivers and HW–SW integration.
  • Excellent technical writing and oral presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of DO‑254 interactions when seat controllers include custom hardware.
  • Led improvements in certification processes, templates, automation, and tools.
  • Managed schedule, risk and stakeholder expectations for certification milestones.
  • Experience with Boeing processes or prior OEM certification.
  • Proficient with version control tools such as Git.
  • Experience with Agile planning tools such as JIRA or GitLab.
