Coordinate a national NHS Freedom of Information project that will help improve infection prevention and indoor air quality. You’ll manage FOI requests, track responses and support research that informs policy, protects healthcare workers and promotes safer healthcare environments.
This project will generate valuable evidence that can influence policy and improve healthcare environments across the UK. By coordinating the Freedom of Information process, you’ll ensure we collect high‑quality data from NHS organisations about infection prevention, ventilation and indoor air quality. Without effective coordination, important evidence could be delayed, incomplete or lost.
The information gathered will underpin SHH‑UK’s Safe Air 4 All campaign, helping us identify good practice, highlight areas where improvements are needed and develop evidence‑based recommendations for safer healthcare environments.
Your work will support reports, policy briefings and advocacy that are shared with NHS organisations, policymakers, regulators, professional bodies and the media. Ultimately, the evidence you help collect could contribute to improvements that better protect healthcare workers, patients and visitors from airborne infections.
As a small charity, volunteers are essential to everything we achieve. Your organisational skills will enable our researchers to focus on analysing the evidence while ensuring the project runs efficiently and delivers meaningful outcomes.
By helping us build a robust national evidence base, you’ll make a tangible contribution to improving healthcare worker safety and supporting long‑term changes in infection prevention policy.
What are we looking for?
Things happen on time. You don’t need to have previous experience of Long Covid or infection prevention, but you should be organised, proactive and committed to helping deliver a project that has the potential to influence national policy. The most important qualities are excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to communicate professionally with a range of stakeholders. You’ll be comfortable working independently while collaborating with a supportive remote team.
- Excellent organisational and administrative skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Experience maintaining accurate records, databases or project trackers.
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office, spreadsheets and email.
- Excellent written communication skills.
- The ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines.
- Confidence communicating professionally with external organisations.
- A commitment to SHH‑UK’s mission and values.
Experience of project coordination, administration or working with Freedom of Information requests would be an advantage. We also welcome applicants with experience from the NHS, public sector, higher education or the charity sector, as well as those with transferable organisational skills.
Full induction, guidance and ongoing support will be provided throughout the project. Above all, we’re looking for someone who enjoys helping projects run smoothly and wants to use their organisational skills to contribute to evidence‑based improvements in healthcare. As part of our volunteer team, you’ll play an important role in helping SHH‑UK build the evidence needed to create safer healthcare environments for staff, patients and visitors.

What will you be doing?
As our Volunteer Project Coordinator, you’ll play a central role in delivering SHH‑UK’s national Freedom of Information (FOI) project, which is gathering evidence about infection prevention and indoor air quality across NHS organisations. Working closely with our Policy and Research Trustees, you’ll coordinate the day‑to‑day administration of the project, ensuring FOI requests are submitted, tracked and followed up efficiently. You’ll help keep the project on schedule and ensure responses are available for analysis by our research team.
- Preparing and submitting FOI requests to NHS organisations.
- Maintaining a project tracker to monitor requests, responses, deadlines and correspondence.
- Following up outstanding requests and monitoring statutory response deadlines.
- Liaising professionally with NHS FOI teams to answer queries or clarify requests.
- Supporting internal reviews where responses are overdue or incomplete.
- Organising and securely storing FOI responses and related documentation.
- Working with the Research Assistant(s) to ensure responses are available for analysis.
- Providing regular progress updates to the project leads and highlighting any issues affecting delivery.
The role is fully remote and flexible, requiring approximately 2–4 hours per week over a six‑month period. You’ll receive support, guidance and training throughout and become part of a friendly team committed to improving healthcare worker safety through evidence‑based policy and advocacy.
