As one of the country’s largest providers of quality education and training, City College Plymouth is entering a period of transition to enable us to propel education into the future. We take pride in offering a learning environment and organisational culture that contribute positively to the health, wellbeing and sustainability of our community and enable all our students and staff to achieve their full potential.
The Role
We are seeking a practical, organised and safety‑conscious Technician to support Marine Engineering and Higher Education Engineering programmes. You will ensure that workshops, laboratories and specialist teaching spaces are safe, well equipped and ready for teaching, practical assessment and student project work.
- Prepare workshops, laboratories, tools, materials and specialist equipment for practical teaching, assessment and engineering projects.
- Set up, test and support the safe use of mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, fabrication and marine engineering systems.
- Provide technical assistance to lecturers and learners during practical investigations, laboratory activities, prototype development and projects.
- Inspect equipment, diagnose faults and complete or arrange maintenance, servicing, calibration and statutory checks.
- Maintain accurate equipment, stock, servicing and safety records, including the secure issue and return of tools, materials and PPE.
- Support risk assessment, COSHH, PUWER and electrical safety requirements, and contribute to open events, employer engagement and enrichment activities.
You will hold a recognised Level 3 or higher engineering qualification and have relevant practical experience. Experience of supporting workshops, laboratories, marine systems or education-based engineering projects would be advantageous.
What Will You Bring To The Role
- Adapting – you remain calm when priorities change and switch efficiently between preparing practical sessions, responding to equipment issues, supporting learners and maintaining records. You adjust your approach while keeping workshops and laboratories safe and effective.
- Collaborating – you work positively with lecturers, learners, managers, employers and contractors. You listen carefully, consider different perspectives and communicate technical guidance clearly and respectfully.
- Focus – you pay close attention to safety‑critical details when checking equipment, preparing resources and maintaining records. You stay composed under pressure and make timely decisions when an issue could affect safety or teaching.
- Problem Solving – you use practical knowledge and logical thinking to diagnose faults and resolve technical or resource problems. You investigate unfamiliar issues, apply new knowledge and recommend improvements to equipment and working practices.
Benefits
- Holiday: 29 days plus bank holidays and College Closure over Christmas.
- Career development opportunities.
- Generous contributions towards your pension.
- Free tea, coffee and lunch in our dedicated staff lounge.
How We Recruit
We aim to recruit based on potential, not experience. We are interested in seeing your behaviours in action and how they will help you become successful at City College Plymouth, giving everyone the opportunity to show their potential, regardless of background or experience. After completing our online application form, you will be asked to complete an online assessment within a few days of the vacancy closing. This assessment asks you no questions at all. Instead, it observes your behaviour and natural strengths in action through a series of engaging, intuitive tasks. You will receive a report outlining your behaviours once you have completed the assessment, regardless of whether you progress to the next stage, providing you with useful feedback.
The College welcomes applications from service leavers and the Armed Forces community, and supports service leavers who are Reservists in any of the Armed Forces. The College reserves the right to close this advertisement early if sufficient applications have been received.
