Overview

The Principal Engineer will be accountable for the design delivery of allocated engineering work packages within electrical services and related disciplines, ensuring all specified project outcomes are met on time, within budget, and to client specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure project requirements are fully met and technically sound design solutions are produced, including all associated reporting and cost estimating.
  • Produce and approve design concepts, drawings, specifications, and other technical documents.
  • Establish internal design standards and processes for continuous improvement of quality and efficiency.
  • Contribute to long‑term technical development of the office by applying new techniques, procedures, and practices.
  • Work within a project team to achieve project objectives.
  • Supervise and approve the work of others, including signing off design certificates.
  • Prepare, check, and approve feasibility studies, outline and detailed design technical reports.
  • Implement effective, value‑for‑money, and innovative design solutions to meet technical and project requirements.
  • Prepare and check engineering designs, calculations, oversee production of technical documents, and assist in expressions of interest and tenders.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation (including CDM Regulations).
  • Manage and respond to project‑related correspondence and represent the Technical Directorate within SYSTRA Group.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Relevant degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body/engineering institute (e.g., ICE, IET, IMechE).
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer qualification.
  • Knowledge and experience leading electrical services design within the built environment and/or transport infrastructure, including railway lineside systems, signalling power, level crossings, LV distribution, lighting, small power, containment, earthing, and fire alarms.
  • Knowledge of multi‑disciplinary issues associated with E&P and/or the Built Environment.
  • Previous experience delivering electrical design packages for railway and/or highway tunnel environments.
  • Experience with contract conditions, processes, and procedures.
  • Ability in programming, delivery, budgeting, and timescales.
  • Ability in applying safety standards and CDM regulations.
  • Line management experience.
  • Proficiency with relevant design software.
