Job Description:

Responsibilities

  • Ensure secure entry and exit of staff, visitors and vehicles.
  • Carry out searches of staff, prisoners, visitors and vehicles.
  • Escort vehicles and contractors around the prison site.
  • Issue and collect staff keys and radios.
  • Patrol the perimeter fence and search for breaches.
  • Operate the prison radio system.
  • Monitor CCTV and report suspicious activity.
  • Welcome visitors and escort them when required.
  • Log and monitor mail entering the prison, reporting contraband and preserving evidence.
  • Ensure cell doors are locked and prisoners are accounted for.
  • Photograph prisoners and process prisoners’ property and parcels.
  • Assist prison officers in escorting prisoners around the prison.
  • Deliver and collect food trolleys or operate an electric tug vehicle.
  • Collect mail from the local sorting office, maintaining the PIN phone system and logging requests.
  • Understand and conform to national and local policies, and respond appropriately to incidents and emergencies.
  • Work independently as part of a team, demonstrating good judgement, responsibility and teamwork.

Working Hours and Conditions

Average 37 hours per week, including nights, evenings, weekends and bank/public holidays on a rolling shift pattern. The salary includes a 20% allowance for unsocial hours.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • No formal qualifications are required.
  • Good physical fitness: lifting, carrying, standing and walking for long periods.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, often in lone working situations.
  • Strong judgement, responsibility, common sense and teamwork.
  • Proficiency in English; proficiency in Welsh may be required in Wales.
  • Eligibility for the role, including passing security, identity and background checks.
