Prison Officer – HMP Whitemoor

Starting salary: £36,816 (39‑hour week, includes 20% unsocial hours)

Due to the security status of this prison a Counter‑Terrorism Check (CTC) will need to be undertaken. Proof that you have been resident in the UK for the last three years is required to complete the CTC vetting process. Applicants who do not meet the residency requirement will not be able to take up the post.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain safety and security within the prison environment, protecting the public and the wider community.
  • Build constructive, positive and professional relationships with prisoners.
  • Support colleagues and work as part of a team to keep the prison and everyone working there safe.
  • Carry out roles that range from peace‑keeping and inline‑corridor duties to counselling, teaching and other support functions.
  • Shift work, including nights, weekends and public holidays, as required.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Minimum 18 years of age at the time of commencement.
  • Meeting Civil Service nationality requirements (see below).
  • Pass a medical and fitness assessment, including eyesight and hearing tests.
  • Compliance with eyesight standards in both eyes, with and without corrective lenses.
  • Acceptable hearing without the use of hearing aids.
  • Tattoos must not be offensive, discriminatory, violent or intimidating; facial tattoos are generally not acceptable unless for cultural, religious or medical reasons.
  • Proof of UK residence for the last three years for CTC vetting.

Nationality Requirements

  • UK nationals nationals of the Republic of Ireland nationals of Commonwealth countries with the right to work in the UK nationals of the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein and family members with settled or pre‑settled status (EUSS) individuals with limited leave to remain or indefinite leave to remain who were eligible for EUSS before 31 Dec 2020 Turkish nationals and certain family members with accrued right to work in the Civil Service

Pay

  • 37 hours per week – £34,928 per year
  • 39 hours per week – £36,816 per year
  • 41 hours per week – £39,334 per year

All salary figures include any additional allowances applicable to the role and location.

Assessment Process

The application process includes:

  • Online assessment centre where behaviours, strengths and abilities are assessed.
  • Medical and fitness assessment covering eyesight, hearing and general health screening.

Travel to Work

Some prison establishments are in rural locations with limited public transport. A driving licence and own transport are beneficial but not essential; shift times are fixed and punctuality is your responsibility.
