Job Overview
Probation Services Officers support the public by helping offenders in the community to manage risk, secure their release, and rebuild their lives. The role involves working with medium and lower‑risk offenders before and after sentence.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess offenders, develop and implement risk management plans, and provide information to courts and agencies.
- Prepare clear, accurate reports and maintain case records within tight deadlines.
- Offer practical advice on housing, employment, and other support services to help offenders reintegrate.
- Provide case‑management support following service procedures and professional judgement.
Qualifications & Experience
- Empathetic, patient, resilient, and organized individuals are sought; a degree is not required.
- Experience working with people who have social or personal difficulties is preferred.
- Strong written communication skills are essential.
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn professional probation practice and service procedures.
Salary & Progression
Starting salary: £28,064, the minimum of the advertised pay band. Annual progression is available through the Competency Based Framework, with pay band increases aligned with Civil Service pay guidance.
Working Arrangements
Hybrid working is offered where business needs allow, allowing a mix of base location, MoJ sites, and/or home working within the UK.

Eligibility & Prerequisites
Applicants must have the right to work in the UK. The role is not eligible for new Skilled Worker visas post‑22 July 2025 unless a prior Skilled Worker visa was held. All candidates are subject to security and identity checks before appointment.
