Skilled Mechanic – CROWN Packaging Manufacturing UK Limited

We currently have a vacancy for a Skilled Mechanic working continuous shifts (2 x 12 hours days & 2 x 12 hour nights, followed by 4 rest days), based in Botcherby, Carlisle (UK). The Botcherby Plant is a major supplier of our aluminum beverage can products, manufacturing in the region of 1.4 billion cans and in excess of 6 billion ring pull ends per year, operating 24/7.

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Skilled Mechanic to join our team at CROWN Packaging Manufacturing UK Limited. The successful candidate will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of a wide range of industrial machinery and equipment within our manufacturing facility, ensuring optimal operational efficiency, exemplary quality standards and minimising machine downtime.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform planned, preventative and corrective maintenance on a variety of production machinery, including but not limited to presses, conveyors, forming equipment, coating equipment and associated auxiliary systems.
  • Diagnose mechanical faults and failures accurately and efficiently using a range of diagnostic tools and techniques.
  • Execute repairs, replacements, and adjustments of mechanical components such as gears, bearings, motors, pumps, hydraulics, and pneumatics.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical manuals to aid in troubleshooting and repair activities.
  • Ensure all work is carried out in compliance with health and safety regulations, company policies, and quality standards.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by identifying potential areas for machine optimization and reliability enhancements.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, parts used, and equipment performance.
  • Collaborate effectively with production teams, engineers, and other maintenance personnel to ensure seamless operations.
  • Participate in training programs to enhance skills and knowledge of new technologies and equipment.
  • Assist with the installation and commissioning of new machinery as required.

Job Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Skilled Mechanic or similar role in a manufacturing, automotive or industrial environment.
  • Recognised qualification in a Mechanical biased discipline e.g., NVQ Level 3, HNC/HND, City & Guilds
  • Strong understanding of mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and maintenance manuals.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a methodical approach to fault finding.
  • Demonstrated commitment to health and safety procedures and practices.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic IT skills for record-keeping and accessing technical information.
