Cook Bangor (9-5 pm Working Hours Only) (Weekend Rates Apply)
We are currently recruiting a Cook for our client based in Bangor. The successful candidates will start once the vetting paperwork and ANI completed.
Rate of Pay and Allowances
Secure building working allowance: £60.42 per month or £15.10 per week.

Working Hours
The shift pattern for a Cook is based on a 37‑hour week. Hours worked per week will vary and include weekends and public/privilege holidays. The current shift pattern is based on a four‑week cycle. Shift start time is 9:00 am; finish time is 5:00 pm, with possible variations to meet emerging business needs. Time spent travelling to and from your post is not included as part of your shift.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide a professional catering service, ensuring Woodlands and JJC standards are maintained.
- Hands‑on involvement in the day‑to‑day running of the catering department.
- Help maintain the environmental health high hygiene rating (5 stars).
Operational
- Preparation and service of food and beverages using appropriate methods to meet the needs of young people in custody and supporting staff.
- Handle special dietary needs following instructions of the catering manager; liaise with team leader or medical officer when manager not on duty.
- Assist the catering manager with compilation, distribution and collation of menus that meet nutritional needs of the young people in care.
- Maintain a clean and hygienic kitchen and monitor food safety regulations and COSHH compliance.
- Carry out cleaning duties as outlined by the Safe Food Policy and prepare cleaning rosters and schedules.
- Carry out specialist cleaning duties as required.
- Ensure safe working practice and support implementation of best practices and policies.
- Inspect equipment and report faults immediately to the Catering Manager.
- Inspect kitchen and ensure all risks are managed.
Staffing and Management
- Support and assist the catering manager in all aspects of kitchen management.
- Liaise with young people and staff to establish good communication and promote input from children.
- Attend departmental meetings and other operational support meetings as required.
- Actively participate in training needs contained in the post holder’s Personal Development Plan.
- Advise catering assistants with queries, aiming to improve their catering skills.
- Cook and prepare meals according to the menu, ensuring correct portion control to prevent waste and excess cost.
- Monitor food products to prevent unnecessary disposal before expiry.
- Store food correctly to prevent accelerated deterioration and need for reordering.
- Advise catering management on cost‑efficiency improvements for meals.
- Use cleaning products in recommended quantities.
Procurement
- Order products and issue supplies within Woodlands, JJC and maintain records of stores (food temperatures, delivery date, expiry date, quality).
- Assist with receipt, unloading/loading of supplies and equipment, complying with food hygiene and health & safety procedures.
- Maintain adequate supplies of food at house unit level.
- Report shortages to catering manager and inform of new products needing to be ordered.
Essential Criteria
- Level 3 NVQ – Diploma in Professional Cookery OR City & Guilds 705 and 706 or equivalent.
- 6 months demonstrable experience in a Cook position in a professional capacity.
- Current Level 2 Food Hygiene qualification.
- Criminal record will not necessarily be a bar to obtaining a position.
