Senior Dental Officer role provides autonomous clinical care and leadership within Community Dental Services, including management of sedation and general anaesthesia for patients with complex needs.
Responsibilities
- Provide autonomous clinical care and leadership as a Senior Dental Officer.
- Assess, treatment plan and manage patients requiring conscious sedation and general anaesthesia, including those with complex needs.
- Deliver high-quality Special Care Dentistry for patients with medical, behavioural or social complexities.
- Lead and support sedation and general anaesthesia services in line with national guidance and clinical governance standards.
- Manage pain and anxiety using behavioural approaches and advanced sedation methods.
- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, ensuring effective communication with patients, carers and healthcare professionals.
- Maintain high standards of clinical governance, record-keeping, consent and risk management.
- Manage a complex clinical workload, supporting service capacity and waiting-list pressures.
- Contribute to service development, audit, quality improvement and evidence-based practice.
- Support efficient use of resources and maintain responsibility for clinical equipment and safety standards.
- Participate in teaching, mentoring and professional development, maintaining required competencies and appraisal processes.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Dental Surgery or equivalent.
- Fully registered with the UK General Dental Council.
- Completed foundation training or equivalent.
- Eligible for the National Dental Performers List without conditions or restrictions.
- Evidence of continuing professional development in a portfolio.
- Present a portfolio of clinical experience and demonstrate full range of dental skills.
- Ability to work unsupervised and take leadership responsibilities.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods during assessment and treatment.
- IT skills including electronic patient record systems (e.g., Sensei).
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Postgraduate qualification in Sedation, Special Care or Paediatric Dentistry.
- Experience of conscious sedation and general anaesthesia in a community setting.
- Experience working with special‑needs and paediatric groups, including medically‑compromised patients.
- Experience in supervising line‑management and running clinics with support staff.
- Experience of clinical audit and quality improvement projects.
- Experience in teaching or training dental teams.
- Knowledge of Dental Commissioning and provision of dentistry in NHS England.
- Valid driving licence and access to transport for inter‑site travel.

- Enhanced DBS disclosure.
- Valid driving licence and access to transport with appropriate business insurance to travel throughout the trust.
- Ability to manoeuvre patients using mechanical aids.
