Overview

An exciting opportunity for an Optometrist to join our expanding Ophthalmology team in North Devon. The postholder will deliver core optometry services and undertake a range of extended roles within the optometry service.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality clinical support to Ophthalmology clinics at North Devon District Hospital, Bideford Hospital, South Molton Eye Clinic, and other community locations.
  • Adhere to professional and regulatory standards set by the College of Optometrists, the General Optical Council, and Trust policies.
  • Deliver expert refraction for adults and children.
  • Perform advanced fundus and media examinations.
  • Interpret diagnostic tests such as OCT, corneal topography, visual fields and colour vision assessments.
  • Support medical contact lens, low vision, paediatric, glaucoma and corneal pathways.
  • Co‑manage glaucoma, ectasia monitoring and paediatric co‑managed clinics in collaboration with Orthoptists and Ophthalmologists.
  • Develop and deliver advanced skills including scleral lens fitting, paediatric contact lenses, extended wear lens management, children’s low vision assessments, and leading specialist clinics such as Ectasia Diagnostics.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary clinics and contribute to medical retina, glaucoma, corneal, paediatric, cataract and emergency eye care pathways.
  • Shape the local optometry service and develop new models of care.

Qualifications

  • Register with the General Optical Council and be a member of the College of Optometrists.
  • Experience delivering advanced optometry services in an NHS setting.
  • Proficiency in refraction, fundus examination and interpretation of diagnostic tests.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams and collaborating with ophthalmologists.
