We are looking for an experienced, motivated, dynamic registered health professional to join the Fracture Clinic Team at University Hospitals. The role supports the running of the Fracture Clinic Services as part of the wider Clinical Support Services Outpatients team, encompassing Trauma and Elective clinics, Virtual Fracture Clinic and Plaster Room Services (Adult, Paediatric and Outreach Teams).

Applicants must currently hold or be willing to complete the British Orthopaedic Association British Casting Certificate.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report from their current UK occupational health provider or UK GP.

Main duties of the job

You will support the current management team in running and developing the Fracture Clinic services. Using UHCWi methodology you will identify areas for improvement, enhance the patient journey and promote staff wellbeing and morale.

You will maintain a safe environment by monitoring health and safety/risk assessments, ensuring effective roster management, performing local and Trust‑wide audits, and acting on results. You will work with wider teams to support sickness absence, resource utilisation, finance and learning opportunities for students and trainees.

  • Accountable for actions in accordance with governing bodies such as the British Orthopaedic Association and Nursing and Midwifery Council.
  • Communicate clinical decisions, policy and care pathways to patients, carers and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Act as a skilled practitioner and clinical leader, supporting the management team, participating in service and policy development and deputising in the absence of the clinic manager.
  • Lead the service as an autonomous practitioner, delivering a high standard of care.
  • Ensure safe clinical assessment, planning, implementation and audit of care; act as patient advocate when necessary.
  • Organise and participate in cross‑departmental activities including HR, sickness management, resourcing and bleep‑holder responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate technical clinical skills: complex patient monitoring, wound management, medicines management, safeguarding and equipment maintenance.
  • Develop and educate staff and students through supervision, mentorship and appraisal; monitor mandatory training compliance.
  • Manage clinical events requiring varying levels of effort, support patients, carers and others during difficult situations, and promote health and safety compliance.
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment; use audit tools to monitor cleanliness, hygiene and infection control.
  • Order and manage stock levels, liaise with materials management, evaluate products and ensure cost effectiveness.
  • Support staffing roster management using the e‑roster system, ensuring a safe, effective skill mix and cost‑effective staffing levels.
  • Utilise IT systems to record patient information accurately and timely; document all actions as per Trust policy.
  • Support local, Trust‑wide and national audits, analyse results and formulate action plans to maintain and improve standards and achieve KPIs.

Qualifications

  • Current professional registration with evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Teaching and assessing qualification, recently updated.
  • Willingness to undertake the British Orthopaedic Association British Casting Certificate if not already held.
  • Level 6 study (degree or diploma).
  • Willingness to undertake a Professional Nurse Advocate role (nursing only).

Experience

  • Recent band 5 or higher clinical experience in Trauma or Orthopaedics.
  • Experience managing people and change.
  • Outpatient clinical experience, audit experience and the ability to act on findings.
  • Knowledge of complex wound management, plaster room service, HR and management issues, resource management, staffing levels/skill mix, rostering and finance management.

Knowledge

  • Evidence‑based practice across a range of clinical skills.
  • Professional policies and procedures, trauma/orthopaedic injuries and complex wound management.
  • Clinical governance, safeguarding policy and processes.
  • Current NHS issues and policy/service development.

Skills
