Surgical Tutor

The Postgraduate Medical Education Department are looking for applications for the post of Surgical Tutor at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The Surgical Tutor is an ambassador of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS England), a School of Surgery (SoS) representative and advocate for the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme (ISCP), and undertakes a key role for the Trust in supporting and demonstrating good governance of surgical training matters. The Surgical Tutor is responsible for providing leadership to surgical trainees in the Trust.
The Tutor is jointly appointed by the Specialty Director, the Training Programme Director or Head of Specialty School, the DME at the Trust, and the Regional Director for RCS England. The role will be discussed and formalised at job planning with the Specialty Director and designated appropriate SPA time. RCS Fellowship is mandatory and the appointment must be ratified at RCS England Council.
Main duties of the job
- Support and advise the Director of Medical Education (DME) on educational resource issues for surgery in the Trust.
- Liaise with the School of Surgery via the Core Training Programme Director (TPD) and Core Surgical Training Committee (Core STC).
- Provide a link to the RCS England South West Regional Board, advising the South West Regional Director on service and educational issues affecting surgeons in the Trust.
- Represent Surgical Tutor colleagues in the region if acting as a member of the Regional Board.
- Provide leadership to surgical trainees within the Trust.
Qualifications and Training
- GMC full registration.
- Completed necessary ES training and be a GMC recognised supervisor.
- Specialist or General Practitioner registration.
- Coaching qualification.
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of management and governance structures in medical education and training, and awareness of current processes in the delivery of medical education and training nationally and locally.
- At least 2 years as an educational supervisor.
- Knowledge and understanding of Equality & Diversity legislation, regulations, and procedures.
- Knowledge of GMC regulations, the Learning & Development Agreement with NHSE/Deanery & Trust HR policies.
- Evidence of supporting trainees and trainers.
- Experience of coaching or mentoring.
- Understanding of uses of IT in education.
- Evidence of personal development in medical education.
- Evidence of delivering well evaluated teaching sessions, tutorials or simulation scenarios.
Personal Attributes
- Effective communication skills, motivating and developing others, good interpersonal skills.
- Approachable and able to make time to see trainers and trainees.
- Able to cooperate with other health professionals to promote multidisciplinary working.
- Previous clinical leadership experience and/or commitment to leadership training.
