Main duties of the job
This is a varied and rewarding role, combining specialist patient care, teaching, and strong university links within a regional referral centre. We are seeking a candidate who can deliver all elements of outpatient care, including new patient clinics and treatment planning, to treatment delivered under sedation and experience of treatment under general anaesthetic, which is provided both at Bristol Dental Hospital and at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.

Person specification
Qualifications & Training
- Full registration including specialist list with the General Dental Council (GDC) or eligible for specialist registration
- Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or evidence of within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview
- Examination in Paediatric Dentistry (or equivalent) or within six months of completion
- Membership of appropriate professional organisations related to Paediatric Dentistry
Experience
- Thorough and broad training and experience in Paediatric Dentistry
- Ability to deliver service without direct supervision
- Experience in developing and running undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes
- Unsupervised clinical practice in Paediatric Dentistry
- Leadership and management experience of a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to appraise scientific literature critically
- Experience with clinical governance, audit and quality improvement
- Ability to prioritise, organise time and work independently
- Special interest and expertise that complements department needs
- Management of clinical service and academic staff
- Teaching innovation with objective markers of teaching quality
- Publications in high-impact journals
Clinical Knowledge and Skills
- Up-to-date knowledge and experience in Paediatric Dentistry
- Knowledge of NHS priorities in relation to Paediatric Dentistry
- Broad range of IT skills
Clinical Governance and Audit
- Understanding of clinical governance and responsibilities
- Knowledge of clinical audit principles and participation
- Commitment to evidence-based practice
- Participation in CPD and relevant evidence of activity
Research
- Knowledge of research principles and involvement in research
- Evidence of peer-reviewed research papers
- Ability to raise the department’s academic profile
Teaching and Training
- Experience of teaching medical students and supervising trainees
- Knowledge of teaching within a multidisciplinary team
- Formal teaching qualification (or evidence of equivalent)
- Experience in management training and continued learning
- Ability to organise the efficient and smooth running of a specialist service
- Ability to manage workload of a consultant and work under pressure
- Ability to practice independently as a consultant and demonstrate leadership
- Knowledge of NHS management structures
Interpersonal, communication and team working skills
- Effective communication with patients, relatives, clinical colleagues and support staff
- Proficiency in English (spoken and written)
- Ability to present to an audience and respond to questions
- Ability to develop working relationships across divisions and multi-professional teams
- Flexibility as a team member
Other
- Adaptability to changing circumstances
- Awareness of personal limitations and professional health requirements
- Willingness to travel to other Bristol NHS Foundation Trust sites as required
