Clinical Trial Practitioner/Research Nurse

The Research Nurse/Clinical Trials Practitioner is an autonomous specialist working within the multi-disciplinary paediatric/TYA team. The post holder will take responsibility for the coordination and management of a clinical research portfolio comprising in-house, national and international phase II and III clinical trials in oncology and haematology.

Responsibilities will include: education of patients, families, and colleagues; coordination of the care of patients on trials; collection and preparation of biological samples; collection of trial data; monitoring of expected and unexpected side effects of drugs and other treatment modalities; development of specialised skills and knowledge relating to the conduct of clinical trials, therapies and relevant disease sites; acting as the patient’s advocate and providing informed choice; supporting research in all oncology and haematological malignancies; providing cross cover for members of the team.

Main duties of the job

  • Coordinate and conduct in-house, commercial and non-commercial national and international Phase I, II and III clinical trials.
  • Be accountable for the documentation of trial data according to ICH GCP guidelines.
  • Apply critical appraisal skills in evaluating research protocols.
  • Demonstrate autonomy and the ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary healthcare team to meet patient and family needs across stages of care.
  • Coordinate and monitor the care of patients on clinical trials.
  • Educate the multidisciplinary team about the portfolio of clinical trials.
  • Act as a primary point of contact for patients in specific trials.
  • Educate patients and families about clinical trials, including objectives, scientific rationale, treatment schedule, side effects and follow up plan.
  • Mentor data managers and clinical trial practitioners.
  • Provide cross cover for other research nurses, trial practitioners, data managers and assistants as directed by the Clinical Trials Manager.
  • Take personal responsibility for promoting a safe environment and safe patient care by identifying risk areas and following the incident, serious incident and near miss reporting policy and procedure.
  • Adhere to Trust and Directorate policies, procedures, standards and protocols.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Qualifications

  • NMC First level registration or equivalent relevant degree for research nurse applicants
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Post registration oncology qualification or equivalent
  • Registration on the Academy for Healthcare Science Clinical Research Practitioner (for Clinical Trial Practitioner applicants)
  • Competence in research-oriented PC software (Access/Excel)

Experience

  • Clinical trials experience (for Clinical Trial Practitioner applicants)
  • Significant experience of working in cancer
  • Experience of working with oncology/haematology patients
  • Formal/informal teaching of patients and staff
  • Explaining complex concepts to patients in a clear and simplified manner
  • Acting as a patient advocate
  • Preceptor/facilitator experience
  • Phlebotomy and cannulation experience
