The Gully Cleansing Team is excited to offer a 35 hour Gully Tank Attendant vacancy.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic service that affects every resident within Leeds. With over 152,000 gullies and 48 kilometres of linear drainage to cleanse, the Gully Cleansing Service plays a vital part in keeping the City’s highways safe and free from surface water ponding.

The shift is a 4 x 3 working pattern as below:

Week 1: Monday, Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday

Week 2: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

The average working week is 35 hours. The start time is 06:00 and the finish time is 16:30.

You will be expected to be available to cover emergency call out, for which additional payment will be made. You will also be expected to be available for planned work in traffic sensitive locations, at times outside the normal shift pattern, which include working nights, and you will on occasions start early 04:00 to meet service needs, enhanced rates of pay may apply, dependant on timing, as outlined in the NJC conditions.

Please note that in addition to the salary quoted, this post also attracts enhancements that recognise the requirement to work alternate weekends and Bank Holidays when they fall on your shift.

Job Purpose:

The emptying of gullies and the disposal of waste.

Responsibilities For Grade:

  • Carry out cleansing and emptying of gullies in accordance with the work programme and procedures. Use appropriate equipment to fulfil the duties i.e: tongs, grate – lifters, crowbars, water-hydrants, pipes etc. Use the jetting mechanism when necessary to clear obstructions.
  • Ensure at all times that Health and Safety regulations are observed and complied with. All work is to be completed in accordance with the appropriate Risk Assessment and Safe Working Procedure.
  • Ensure that specific gullies are completed in accordance with the programme of work. Report any failure to complete the programme of work to a Chargehand/Supervisor immediately or at least at the end of the working day.
  • Be prepared to respond to emergency requests outside normal hours.
  • Attend training courses as necessary.
  • Report suggestions for improvements to the service to a manager/ Supervisor to increase efficiency in service delivery.
  • Dispose of waste into the appropriate manner. Take care to avoid waste being scattered. Extra care must be taken when handling potentially hazardous or toxic waste.
  • Use and work with any in‑cab technology regarding the daily work.
  • Inform Chargehand/Supervisor of any problem with the mobile phone and be responsible for safe keeping.
  • Carry out all work with the highest standards of behaviour and conduct thereby reflecting the importance of the role as an ambassador for the City and the Council. In particular, to respond courteously and professionally to contact with and requests from our customers.
  • Wear protective clothing, boots, gloves, high visibility jackets, ear defenders, visor, etc. as required by the Risk Assessment and Safe Working Procedure.
  • To flexibly carry out any other duties in line with the general character of the post and consistent with its level of responsibility as required by the Council.
